Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 13193
It is narrated on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a man from the People of the Book came to the court of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and while greeting the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he said, "Assam Alaikum". Hearing this, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! Should I not chop off his head?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "No, but when the People of the Book greet you, you should only say 'Wa Alaikum'."

حضرت انس رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ ایک کتابی آدمی بارگاہ نبوت میں حاضر ہوا اور نبی ﷺ کو سلام کرتے ہوئے اس نے " السام علیکم " کہا، یہ سن کر حضرت عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کہنے لگے یا رسول اللہ ﷺ ! کیا میں اس کی گردن نہ اڑا دوں؟ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا نہیں، البتہ جب اہل کتاب تمہیں سلام کیا کریں تو تم صرف وعلیکم کہا کرو۔
Hazrat Anas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se marvi hai ki ek martaba ek Kitabi aadmi bargah e nabuvvat mein hazir hua aur Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ko salam karte huye usne "alssalam ualaikum" kaha, yeh sunkar Hazrat Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehne lage Ya Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)! kya mein is ki gardan na ura doon? Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya nahi, balke jab Ahle Kitab tumhein salam kiya karen to tum sirf Waalaikum kaha karo.
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا ، يَقُولُ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَلَا أَضْرِبُ عُنُقَهُ؟ قَالَ:" لَا، إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَيْكُمْ، فَقُولُوا: وَعَلَيْكُمْ".
