Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 17632
Narrated by Nawas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about righteousness and sin, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Righteousness is good character and sin is that which pricks your conscience and you dislike that people should come to know of it."

حضرت نواس رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ میں نے نبی ﷺ سے نیکی اور گناہ کے متعلق پوچھا تو نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا نیکی حسن خلق کا نام ہے اور گناہ وہ ہوتا ہے جو تمہارے دل میں کھٹکے اور تم اس بات کو ناپسند سمجھو کہ لوگ اس سے واقف ہوں۔
Hazrat Nawas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se marvi hai keh maine Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se neki aur gunah ke mutalliq poocha to Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya neki husn khulq ka naam hai aur gunah wo hota hai jo tumhare dil mein khitake aur tum is baat ko napasand samjho keh log is se waqif hon.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْقُدُّوسِ أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَمْرٍو ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ جَابِرٍ القاصُّ ، عَنْ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ، فَقَالَ: " الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ، وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَعْلَمَهُ النَّاسُ" .
