Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 21636
It is narrated by Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out for the Battle of Uhud, some people from the army returned from the way. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were divided into two groups regarding them. One group was of the opinion that they should be killed, while the second group said no. Upon this, this verse was revealed, "What is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties concerning the hypocrites?" And the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Madinah is Taybah (pure). It removes impurities just as fire removes the dross of silver."

حضرت زید بن ثابت رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ نبی کریم ﷺ غزوہ احد کے لئے روانہ ہوئے تو لشکر کے کچھ لوگ راستے ہی سے واپس آگئے صحابہ کرام رضی اللہ عنہم ان کے بارے میں دو گروہ ہوگئے، ایک گروہ کی رائے یہ تھی کہ انہیں قتل کردیا جائے اور گروہ ثانی کہتا تھا نہیں اس پر یہ آیت نازل ہوئی کہ " تمہیں کیا ہوگیا ہے کہ تم منافقین کے بارے میں دو گروہ ہوگئے اور نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا مدینہ طیبہ ہے یہ گندگی کو اسی طرح دور کردیتا ہے جیسے آگ چاندی کے میل کچیل کو دور کردیتی ہے۔
Hazrat Zaid bin Sabit razi Allah anhu se marvi hai keh Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) Ghazwa Uhud ke liye rawana huye to lashkar ke kuch log raste hi se wapas agaye Sahaba kiram razi Allah anhum unke bare mein do group hogaye, aik group ki rai ye thi keh unhen qatal kar diya jaye aur group sani kehta tha nahin is par ye ayat nazil hui keh " Tumhen kya hogaya hai keh tum munafiqeen ke bare mein do group hogaye aur Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya Madina Tayyiba hai ye gandegi ko isi tarah door karta hai jaise aag chandi ke mail kacheel ko door kar deti hai.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ زَيد بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ فَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِئَتَيْنِ وَاللَّهُ أَرْكَسَهُمْ بِمَا كَسَبُوا سورة النساء آية 88، قَالَ: رَجَعَ أُنَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَكَانَ النَّاسُ فِيهِمْ فِرْقَتَيْنِ، فَرِيقٌ يَقُولُونَ: قَتْلَهُمْ، وَفَرِيقٌ يَقُولُونَ: لَا، قالَ: فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِئَتَيْنِ سورة النساء آية 88 وَقَالَ: " إِنَّهَا طَيْبَةُ، وَإِنَّهَا تَنْفِي الْخَبَثَ، كَمَا تَنْفِي النَّارُ خَبَثَ الْفِضَّةِ" .
