The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2364
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the polytheists used to part their hair, while the People of the Book used to leave it as it was. And the blessed habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was that in matters where there was no commandment, he preferred to follow the People of the Book rather than the polytheists. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also did not part his hair. But later, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) started parting his hair.

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ مشرکین اپنے سر کے بالوں میں مانگ نکالا کرتے تھے جبکہ اہل کتاب انہیں یوں ہی چھوڑ دیتے تھے، اور نبی ﷺ کی عادت مبارکہ یہ تھی کہ جن معاملات میں کوئی حکم نہ آتا ان میں مشرکین کی نسبت اہل کتاب کی متابعت و موافقت زیادہ پسند تھی، اس لئے نبی ﷺ بھی مانگ نہیں نکالتے تھے لیکن بعد میں آپ ﷺ نے مانگ نکالنا شروع کر دی تھی۔
Saina Ibne Abbas Razzi Allah Anhuma Se Marvi Hai Ke Mushrikeen Apne Sar Ke Balon Mein Maang Nikala Karte The Jabke Ahl e Kitaab Unhen Yun Hi Chhor Dete The, Aur Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) Ki Aadat Mubarak Ye Thi Ke Jin Mamlaat Mein Koi Hukm Na Aata Un Mein Mushrikeen Ki Nisbat Ahl e Kitaab Ki Mutaba'at o Muwafaqat Zyada Pasand Thi, Is Liye Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) Bhi Maang Nahi Nikalte The Lekin Baad Mein Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) Ne Maang Nikalna Shuru Kar Di Thi.
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: كَانَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ يَسْدِلُونَ أَشْعَارَهُمْ، وَكَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ يَفْرُقُونَ رُءُوسَهُم، قَالَ: وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ" يُعْجِبُهُ مُوَافَقَةُ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فِي بَعْضِ مَا لَمْ يُؤْمَرِ فِيهِ، فَسَدَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَاصِيَتَهُ، ثُمَّ فَرَقَ بَعْدُ".
