Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 26410
It is narrated on the authority of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent out an army, and Zaid bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with them, he would appoint him as the commander of that army. If he (Zaid) had lived after the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he (the Prophet) would have made him his Caliph.

حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے مروی ہے کہ نبی ﷺ نے جب کبھی کسی لشکر میں حضرت زید بن حارثہ رضی اللہ عنہ کو بھیجا تو انہی کو اس لشکر کا امیر مقرر فرمایا: اگر وہ نبی ﷺ کے بعد بھی زندہ رہتے تو نبی ﷺ انہی کو اپنا خلیفہ مقرر فرماتے۔
Hazrat Ayesha Radi Allaho Anha se marvi hai keh Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ne jab kabhi kisi lashkar mein Hazrat Zaid bin Haritha Radi Allaho Anho ko bheja to unhi ko us lashkar ka ameer muqarrar farmaya: Agar woh Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ke baad bhi zinda rehte to Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam unhi ko apna khalifa muqarrar farmate.
وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي: حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَرَّاقُ , قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا وَائِلُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ , عَنِ الْبَهِيِّ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ , قَالَتْ: " مَا بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَيْدَ بْنَ حَارِثَةَ فِي جَيْشٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا أَمَّرَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ , وَلَوْ بَقِيَ بَعْدَهُ لَاسْتَخْلَفَهُ" .
