The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2789
Karib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Lady Ummul Fadhl bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) sent me to Syria. I reached there and completed my task. While I was still in Syria, the moon of Ramadan was sighted. We had sighted the moon on Thursday night. At the end of the month, when I returned to Madinah, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me about the work. Then the topic of the moon sighting came up. He asked, "When did you people sight the moon?" I replied, "On Thursday night." He asked, "Did you see it yourself?" I said, "Yes, I did, and so did other people. They fasted after sighting the moon, and Sayyiduna Ameer Mu'awiya (may Allah be pleased with him) also fasted accordingly." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "But we sighted the moon on Friday night (the next day was Saturday), so we will continue fasting until we have completed thirty days or until we sight the moon." I said, "Can't you rely on the sighting and fasting of Sayyiduna Ameer Mu'awiya (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied, "No, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has commanded us this way." (From this incident, the jurists have derived the issue of differing verdicts based on location).

کریب رحمہ اللہ کہتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ سیدہ ام الفضل بنت حارث رضی اللہ عنہا نے انہیں شام بھیجا، میں نے وہاں پہنچ کر اپنا کام کیا، ابھی میں شام ہی میں تھا کہ ماہ رمضان کا چاند نظر آ گیا، ہم نے شب جمعہ کو چاند دیکھا تھا، مہینہ کے آخر میں جب میں مدینہ منورہ واپس آیا تو سیدنا عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے مجھ سے کام کے متعلق پوچھا، پھر چاند کا تذکرہ چھڑ گیا، انہوں نے پوچھا کہ تم لوگوں نے چاند کب دیکھا تھا؟ میں نے عرض کیا: شب جمعہ کو، انہوں نے پوچھا: کیا تم نے خود بھی دیکھا تھا؟ میں نے کہا: جی ہاں! اور دوسرے لوگوں نے بھی دیکھا تھا، لوگوں نے چاند دیکھ کر روزہ رکھا اور سیدنا امیر معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے بھی اس کے مطابق روزہ رکھا، سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے فرمایا: لیکن ہم نے تو ہفتہ کی رات کو چاند دیکھا ہے (اگلے دن ہفتہ تھا) اس لے ہم اس وقت تک مسلسل روزے رکھتے رہیں گے جب تک تیس روزے پورے نہ ہو جائیں یا چاند نظر نہ آ جائے، میں نے عرض کیا کہ سیدنا امیر معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ کی رؤیت اور روزے پر آپ اکتفاء نہیں کر سکتے؟ فرمایا: نہیں، نبی ﷺ نے یہی حکم دیا ہے۔ (یہیں سے فقہاء نے اختلاف مطالع کا مسئلہ اخذ کیا ہے)۔
Kareem rehmatullah kehte hain ke ek martaba Sayyida Ummul Fazal bint Haris raziallahu anha ne unhen Sham bheja, maine wahan pahunch kar apna kaam kiya, abhi main Sham hi mein tha ke mah-e-Ramzan ka chand nazar aa gaya, hum ne shab-e-Jumuah ko chand dekha tha, mahinay ke akhir mein jab main Madina Munawwara wapas aaya to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas raziallahu anhuma ne mujhse kaam ke mutalliq pucha, phir chand ka tazkira chhid gaya, unhon ne pucha ke tum logon ne chand kab dekha tha? Maine arz kiya: Shab-e-Jumuah ko, unhon ne pucha: kya tum ne khud bhi dekha tha? Maine kaha: ji haan! Aur dusre logon ne bhi dekha tha, logon ne chand dekh kar roza rakha aur Sayyiduna Ameer Muawiyah raziallahu anhu ne bhi is ke mutabiq roza rakha, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas raziallahu anhuma ne farmaya: lekin hum ne to hafte ki raat ko chand dekha hai (agle din hafta tha) is le hum is waqt tak musalsal roze rakhte rahenge jab tak tees roze pure na ho jayen ya chand nazar na aa jaye, maine arz kiya ke Sayyiduna Ameer Muawiyah raziallahu anhu ki ruyat aur roze par aap itqa nahi kar sakte? Farmaya: nahi, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne yahi hukum diya hai. (Yahaan se fuqaha ne ikhtilaf-e-mutala ka masla akhaz kiya hai).
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْهَاشِمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي حَرْمَلَةَ ، عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ " أَنَّ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ بِنْتَ الْحَارِثِ بَعَثَتْهُ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ بِالشَّامِ، قَالَ: فَقَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ، فَقَضَيْتُ حَاجَتَهَا، وَاسْتَهَلَّ عَلَيَّ رَمَضَانُ وَأَنَا بِالشَّامِ، فَرَأَيْنَا الْهِلَالَ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ، ثُمَّ قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فِي آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ، فَسَأَلَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ، ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الْهِلَالَ، فَقَالَ: مَتَى رَأَيْتُمُوهُ؟ فَقُلْتُ: رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ. فَقَالَ: أَنْتَ رَأَيْتَهُ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، وَرَآهُ النَّاسُ وَصَامُوا، وَصَامَ مُعَاوِيَةُ. فَقَالَ: لَكِنَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ السَّبْتِ، فَلَا نَزَالُ نَصُومُ حَتَّى نُكَمِّلَ ثَلَاثِينَ أَوْ نَرَاهُ. فَقُلْتُ: أَوَلَا تَكْتَفِي بِرُؤْيَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَصِيَامِهِ؟ فَقَالَ: لَا، هَكَذَا أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ".
