The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 3212
Hakam bin A'raj said: Once I went to see Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him. He was sitting near the well of Zamzam, leaning on his cloak. I also sat down near him. He was the best companion. I said to him: Tell me something about the day of Ashura. He said: "What do you want to ask about it?" I said: "About the fast. Which day should I fast?" He said: "When you see the new moon of Muharram, count the days. When it is the morning of the ninth day, then fast." I said: "Did the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, fast in the same way?" He said: "Yes."

حکم بن اعرج کہتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ میں سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا، وہ چاہ زمزم کے قریب اپنی چادر سے ٹیک لگائے بیٹھے تھے، میں بھی ان کے پاس جا کر بیٹھ گیا، وہ بہترین ہم نشین تھے، میں نے ان سے عرض کیا کہ مجھے یوم عاشورہ کے متعلق کچھ بتائیے، انہوں نے فرمایا کہ تم اس کے متعلق کس حوالے سے پوچھنا چاہ رہے ہو؟ میں نے عرض کیا کہ روزے کے حوالے سے، یعنی کس دن کا روزہ رکھوں؟ فرمایا: جب محرم کا چاند دیکھ لو تو اس کی تاریخ شمار کرتے رہو، جب نویں تاریخ کی صبح ہو تو روزہ رکھ لو، میں نے عرض کیا کہ کیا نبی ﷺ اسی طرح روزہ رکھتے تھے؟ فرمایا: ہاں۔
Hukm bin Arj kehte hain ki ek martaba main Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ki khidmat mein hazir hua, woh chah Zamzam ke qareeb apni chadar se tek lagaye baithe thay, main bhi un ke pass ja kar baith gaya, woh behtarin hum nashi hain thay, maine un se arz kiya ki mujhe Youm Ashura ke mutalliq kuchh bataiye, unhon ne farmaya ki tum iske mutalliq kis hawale se puchna chah rahe ho? Maine arz kiya ki roza ke hawale se, yani kis din ka roza rakhoon? Farmaya: Jab Muharram ka chand dekh lo to uski tarikh shumaar karte raho, jab naveen tarikh ki subah ho to roza rakh lo, maine arz kiya ki kya Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) isi tarah roza rakhte thay? Farmaya: Haan.
حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، سَمِعَهُ مِنَ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ ، قَالَ: انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ رِدَاءَهُ فِي زَمْزَمَ، فَقُلْتُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ عَاشُورَاءَ، أَيُّ يَوْمٍ أَصُومُهُ؟ فَقَالَ:" إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ، فَاعْدُدْ، فَأَصْبِحْ مِنَ التَّاسِعَةِ صَائِمًا. قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَكَذَاكَ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاة وَالسَّلَامُ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ".
