The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 3393
Hakam bin A'raj said: Once I visited Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, and asked him about the day of 'Ashura. He said, "When you see the new moon of Muharram, count the days, and when it is the morning of the ninth day, observe fast." I asked, "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) observe fast likewise?" He said, "Yes."

حکم بن اعرج کہتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ میں سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا، میں نے ان سے عرض کیا کہ مجھے یوم عاشورہ کے متعلق کچھ بتائیے، انہوں نے فرمایا کہ جب تم محرم کا چاند دیکھ لو تو اس کی تاریخ شمار کرتے رہو، جب نویں تاریخ کی صبح ہو تو روزہ رکھ لو، میں نے عرض کیا کہ کیا نبی ﷺ اسی طرح روزہ رکھتے تھے؟ فرمایا: ہاں۔
Hukm bin Arj kehte hain ki ek martaba main Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas Radi Allahu anhuma ki khidmat mein hazir hua, maine unse arz kiya ki mujhe Yaum-e-Ashura ke mutalliq kuchh bataiye, unhonne farmaya ki jab tum Muharram ka chand dekh lo to uski tarikh shumar karte raho, jab naveen tarikh ki subah ho to roza rakh lo, maine arz kiya ki kya Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) isi tarah roza rakhte the? Farmaya: Haan.
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَنْبَأَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ، فَقَالَ:" إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ، فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ مِنْ تَاسِعَةٍ، فَأَصْبِحْ صَائِمًا". قَالَ يُونُسُ: فَأُنْبِئْتُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: أَكَذَاكَ صَامَ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ:" نَعَمْ".
