"Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites? Allah has cast them back (to disbelief) because of what they have earned..." (V.4:88)

Sahih al-Bukhari 4589
Narrated Zaid bin Thabit: Regarding the Verse:-- Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites? (4.88) Some of the companions of the Prophet returned from the battle of Uhud (i.e. refused to fight) whereupon the Muslims got divided into two parties; one of them was in favor of their execution and the other was not in favour of it. So there ware revealed: Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites? (4.88). Then the Prophet said It (i.e. Medina) is aTayyaboh (good), it expels impurities as the fire expels the impurities of silver.
حضرت زید بن ثابت ؓ سے روایت ہے، انہوں نے درج ذیل آیت کی تفسیر میں فرمایا: ’’تمہیں کیا ہو گیا ہے کہ تم منافقین کے بارے میں دو گروہ بن گئے ہو۔‘‘ کچھ منافقین جو بظاہر نبی ﷺ کے ساتھ تھے جنگ اُحد میں (آپ کو چھوڑ کر) مدینہ طیبہ واپس آ گئے تو ان کے متعلق مسلمانوں میں دو گروہ بن گئے: ایک گروہ کہتا تھا کہ ہم ان سے بھی لڑائی کریں گے جبکہ دوسرا گروہ ان سے لڑنے پر آمادہ نہ تھا تو اس وقت یہ آیت کریمہ نازل ہوئی: (مسلمانو) تمہیں کیا ہو گیا ہے کہ تم منافقین کے بارے میں دو گروہ بن گئے ہو۔ اور آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ’’مدینہ، طیبہ ہے۔ یہ ناپاکی اور خباثت کو اس طرح دور کر دیتا ہے جیسے آگ، چاندی کو میل کچیل کو دور کر دیتی ہے۔‘‘
Hazrat Zaid bin Sabit (Radi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai, unhon ne darj zail ayat ki tafseer mein farmaya: ''Tumhein kya ho gaya hai ke tum munafiqeen ke baare mein do giroh ban gaye ho.'' Kuch munafiqeen jo bator-e-zahir Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke sath the Jang-e-Uhud mein (Aap ko chhor kar) Madina Tayyibah wapas aa gaye to un ke mutaliq Musalmanon mein do giroh ban gaye: ek giroh kehta tha ke hum un se bhi larayi karein ge jabke dusra giroh un se larne par aamada na tha to us waqt yeh ayat-e-karima nazil hui: (Musalmano) tumhein kya ho gaya hai ke tum munafiqeen ke baare mein do giroh ban gaye ho. Aur Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne farmaya: ''Madina, Tayyibah hai. Yeh na-paki aur khabasat ko is tarah door kar deta hai jaise aag, chaandi ke mail-kuchail ko door kar deti hai.''"
حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَدِيٍّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِئَتَيْنِ سورة النساء آية 88 ، رَجَعَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أُحُدٍ وَكَانَ النَّاسُ فِيهِمْ فِرْقَتَيْنِ ، فَرِيقٌ يَقُولُ اقْتُلْهُمْ ، وَفَرِيقٌ يَقُولُ : لَا ، فَنَزَلَتْ : فَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِئَتَيْنِ سورة النساء آية 88 ، وَقَالَ : إِنَّهَا طَيْبَةُ ، تَنْفِي الْخَبَثَ كَمَا تَنْفِي النَّارُ خَبَثَ الْفِضَّةِ .
