Sunan al-Darimi 210
Amr bin Yahya reported that he heard from his father, who narrated from his father, that they used to sit at the door of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) before the Zuhr prayer. When he would come out (of his house), they would set off with him towards the mosque. One day, Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) also came to us and asked, "Has Abu Abdur Rahman (kunya of Ibn Mas'ud) come out yet?" We said, "Not yet." So, he sat with us. When Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came out, we all stood up for him. Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman! I just saw something in the mosque that I disliked, although, all praise be to Allah, it may be good." Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "What was it?" He said, "You will see it yourself when you get there. I saw some people sitting in circles, waiting for the prayer. In each circle, there was a man, and they had pebbles in their hands. The man would say, 'Say Allahu Akbar a hundred times,' so they would say Allahu Akbar a hundred times (counting the pebbles). Then, the man would say, 'Say La ilaha illallah a hundred times,' so they would say La ilaha illallah a hundred times (in the same way). He would say, 'Say Subhan Allah a hundred times,' so they would say Subhan Allah a hundred times in that manner." Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "What did you say to them?" He replied, "I didn't say anything to them, waiting for your opinion or order." Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Why didn't you order them to count their sins with those pebbles, and assure them that none of their good deeds would be wasted?" Then, he set off, and we went with him until he came to one of those circles and stood there. He said, "What is this I see you doing?" They said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman! These are pebbles with which we count the number of Takbir, Tahlil, and Tasbih." Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Count your evil deeds. I guarantee that none of your good deeds will be lost. O Ummah of Muhammad! Woe to you, how quickly you fall into destruction! Many of the Companions of your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) are still alive, and the clothes of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have not yet worn out, nor have your vessels been broken. By the One in whose hand is my soul, are you following a path more guided than the path of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) or are you opening a door of misguidance?" They said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman! We only intended good." Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "How many seekers of good never achieved it! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told us that there would be a group of people who would recite the Quran, but it would not go beyond their throats. By Allah, perhaps most of them are from among you." Then, he left them. Amr bin Salamah said, "We saw those ordinary people from those circles showering us with arrows alongside the Kharijites on the Day of Nahrawan (meaning they were supporting the Kharijites)."

عمرو بن یحییٰ نے خبر دی کہ میں نے اپنے باپ سے سنا، انہوں نے اپنے والد سے روایت کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ ہم ظہر کی نماز سے پہلے سیدنا عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کے دروازے پر بیٹھا کرتے تھے، جب وہ (گھر سے) نکلتے تو ہم ان کے ساتھ مسجد کی طرف روانہ ہوتے، ایک دن ہمارے پاس سیدنا ابوموسیٰ اشعری رضی اللہ عنہ بھی تشریف لائے اور پوچھا: کیا ابوعبدالرحمن (سیدنا ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کی کنیت) باہر نکلے؟ ہم نے کہا: نہیں ابھی تک تو نہیں نکلے، تو وہ بھی ہمارے ساتھ بیٹھ گئے، لہٰذا جب سیدنا ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ باہر آئے تو ہم سب ان کے لئے کھڑے ہو گئے، سیدنا ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: ابوعبدالرحمٰن! میں نے ابھی ابھی مسجد میں ایسی بات دیکھی ہے جو مجھے ناگوار گزری ہے حالانکہ الحمد للہ وہ بہتر اور اچھی ہی ہو گی، سیدنا ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے پوچھا: وہ کیا بات ہے؟ کہا: آپ وہاں پہنچ کر خود دیکھ لیں گے، پھر کہا: میں نے وہاں کچھ لوگوں کی جماعت دیکھی جو حلقوں کی صورت میں بیٹھے نماز کا انتظار کر رہے ہیں، ہر حلقے میں ایک آدمی ہے اور ان کے ہاتھوں میں کنکریاں ہیں، وہ آدمی ان سے کہتا ہے: سو بار اللہ اکبر کہو تو وہ (ان کنکریوں کو گن کر) سو بار اللہ اکبر کہتے ہیں، پھر وہ شخص کہتا ہے: سو بار لا إلٰہ إلا اللہ کہو تو (اس طرح) وہ سو بار لا إلٰہ إلا اللہ کہتے ہیں، وہ کہتا ہے: سو بار سبحان الله کہو تو وہ اس طرح سو بار سبحان اللہ کہتے ہیں۔ سیدنا عبدالله بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: پھر تم نے ان سے کیا کہا؟ انہوں نے کہا: میں نے آپ کی رائے یا حکم کے انتظار میں ان سے کچھ نہیں کہا۔ سیدنا ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: تم نے انہیں یہ حکم کیوں نہ دیا کہ ان کنکریوں سے وہ اپنے گناہ شمار کریں اور تم نے انہیں اس بات کی ضمانت دیدی کہ ان کی نیکیوں میں سے کچھ برباد نہ ہوا۔ پھر وہ چل پڑے، ہم بھی ان کے ساتھ روانہ ہوئے یہاں تک کہ ان حلقوں میں سے ایک حلقے کے پاس آ کر وہ کھڑے ہوئے اور کہا: یہ میں تمہیں کیا کرتے دیکھ رہا ہوں؟ انہوں نے کہا: ابوعبدالرحمٰن! یہ کنکریاں ہیں ہم ان کے ذریعے تکبیر تہلیل اور تسبیح کی تعداد گنتے ہیں۔ سیدنا ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: تم اپنی برائیاں گنو، تو میں ضمانت دیتا ہوں کہ تمہاری نیکیوں میں سے کچھ بھی ضائع نہ ہو گا، اے امت محمد! تمہاری خرابی ہوئی، کتنی جلدی تم ہلاکت و بربادی میں پڑ گئے، ابھی تو تمہارے نبی ﷺ کے بہت سے صحابہ موجود ہیں، اور نبی ﷺ کے کپڑے بھی میلے نہیں ہوئے، نہ آپ کے برتن ٹوٹے ہیں، قسم اس ذات کی جس کے ہاتھ میں میری جان ہے کیا تم ملت محمد ﷺ سے زیادہ ہدایت یافتہ ملت کے راستے پر ہو یا گمراہی و ضلالت کا دروازہ کھول رہے ہو۔ انہوں نے کہا: اے ابوعبدالرحمٰن! ہمارا ارادہ صرف نیکی و بھلائی کا ہی تھا، سیدنا ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: ایسی بھلائی کے متلاشی کبھی بھلائی و نیکی حاصل نہ کر سکیں گے، ہمیں رسول اللہ ﷺ نے بتایا کہ ایک جماعت ہو گی جو قرآن پڑھے گی تو وہ اس کے حلق سے نیچے نہیں اترے گا، قسم اللہ کی ہو سکتا ہے ایسے اکثر لوگ تم ہی میں سے ہوں گے۔ پھر آپ ان کے پاس سے ہٹ گئے، عمرو بن سلمہ نے کہا: ہم نے ان حلقات کے عام آدمیوں کو دیکھا جو واقعہ نہروان کے دن خوارج کے ساتھ ہمیں پر تیر برسا رہے تھے (یعنی وہی لوگ خوارج کا ساتھ دے رہے تھے)۔
Amr bin Yahya ne khabar di ki maine apne baap se suna, unhon ne apne walid se riwayat karte hue kaha ki hum Zuhar ki namaz se pehle Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood (RA) ke darwaze par baitha karte the, jab woh (ghar se) nikalte to hum unke saath masjid ki taraf rawana hote, ek din hamare paas Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (RA) bhi tashreef laaye aur poocha: kya Abu Abdur Rahman (Sayyiduna Ibn Masood (RA) ki kunniyat) bahar nikle? Hum ne kaha: nahin abhi tak to nahin nikle, to woh bhi hamare saath baith gaye, lihaza jab Sayyiduna Ibn Masood (RA) bahar aaye to hum sab unke liye khade ho gaye, Sayyiduna Abu Musa (RA) ne kaha: Abu Abdur Rahman! Maine abhi abhi masjid mein aisi baat dekhi hai jo mujhe nagawar guzri hai halanki alhamdulillah woh behtar aur achchhi hi hogi, Sayyiduna Ibn Masood (RA) ne poocha: woh kya baat hai? Kaha: aap wahan pahunch kar khud dekh lenge, phir kaha: maine wahan kuchh logon ki jamaat dekhi jo halqon ki surat mein baithe namaz ka intezar kar rahe hain, har halqe mein ek aadmi hai aur unke hathon mein kankriyan hain, woh aadmi unse kehta hai: sau baar Allah-u-Akbar kaho to woh (un kankriyon ko gin kar) sau baar Allah-u-Akbar kahte hain, phir woh shakhs kehta hai: sau baar La Ilaha Illallah kaho to (is tarah) woh sau baar La Ilaha Illallah kahte hain, woh kehta hai: sau baar Subhan Allah kaho to woh is tarah sau baar Subhan Allah kahte hain. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masood (RA) ne kaha: phir tum ne unse kya kaha? Unhon ne kaha: maine aap ki rai ya hukm ke intezar mein unse kuchh nahin kaha. Sayyiduna Ibn Masood (RA) ne kaha: tum ne unhen ye hukm kyun na diya ki in kankriyon se woh apne gunah shumaar karen aur tum ne unhen is baat ki zamanat dedi ki unki nekiyon mein se kuchh barbaad na hua. Phir woh chal pade, hum bhi unke saath rawana hue yahan tak ki un halqon mein se ek halqe ke paas aa kar woh khade hue aur kaha: ye main tumhen kya karte dekh raha hun? Unhon ne kaha: Abu Abdur Rahman! Ye kankriyan hain hum in ke zariye takbeer, tahleel aur tasbeeh ki tadad ginte hain. Sayyiduna Ibn Masood (RA) ne kaha: tum apni buraiyan gino, to main zamanat deta hun ki tumhari nekiyon mein se kuchh bhi zaya na hoga, aye ummat-e-Muhammad! Tumhari kharabi hui, kitni jaldi tum halaakat o barbadi mein pad gaye, abhi to tumhare Nabi (SAW) ke bahut se sahaba maujood hain, aur Nabi (SAW) ke kapde bhi maile nahin hue, na aap ke bartan toote hain, qasam is zaat ki jis ke haath mein meri jaan hai kya tum millat-e-Muhammad (SAW) se zyada hidayat yaafta millat ke raste par ho ya gumrahi o zalalat ka darwaza khol rahe ho. Unhon ne kaha: aye Abu Abdur Rahman! Hamara irada sirf neki o bhalaai ka hi tha, Sayyiduna Ibn Masood (RA) ne kaha: aisi bhalaai ke mutalashi kabhi bhalaai o neki hasil na kar sakenge, hamen Rasulullah (SAW) ne bataya ki ek jamaat hogi jo Quran padhegi to woh is ke halaq se neeche nahin utrega, qasam Allah ki ho sakta hai aise aksar log tum hi mein se honge. Phir aap unke paas se hat gaye, Amr bin Salma ne kaha: hum ne un halqat ke aam aadmiyon ko dekha jo waqea Nahrawan ke din Khawarij ke saath hum par teer barsa rahe the (yani wohi log Khawarij ka saath de rahe the).
(حديث موقوف) أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: كُنَّا نَجْلِسُ عَلَى بَابِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْغَدَاةِ، فَإِذَا خَرَجَ، مَشَيْنَا مَعَهُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ، فَجَاءَنَا أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَقَالَ: أَخَرَجَ إِلَيْكُمْ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بَعْدُ؟، قُلْنَا: لَا، فَجَلَسَ مَعَنَا حَتَّى خَرَجَ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ، قُمْنَا إِلَيْهِ جَمِيعًا، فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو مُوسَى: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ آنِفًا أَمْرًا أَنْكَرْتُهُ وَلَمْ أَرَ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ إِلَّا خَيْرًا، قَالَ: فَمَا هُوَ؟، فَقَالَ: إِنْ عِشْتَ فَسَتَرَاهُ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ قَوْمًا حِلَقًا جُلُوسًا يَنْتَظِرُونَ الصَّلَاةَ فِي كُلِّ حَلْقَةٍ رَجُلٌ، وَفِي أَيْدِيهِمْ حَصَا، فَيَقُولُ: كَبِّرُوا مِائَةً، فَيُكَبِّرُونَ مِائَةً، فَيَقُولُ: هَلِّلُوا مِائَةً، فَيُهَلِّلُونَ مِائَةً، وَيَقُولُ: سَبِّحُوا مِائَةً، فَيُسَبِّحُونَ مِائَةً، قَالَ: فَمَاذَا قُلْتَ لَهُمْ؟، قَالَ: مَا قُلْتُ لَهُمْ شَيْئًا انْتِظَارَ رَأْيِكَ أَوِ انْتِظَارَ أَمْرِكَ، قَالَ: أَفَلَا أَمَرْتَهُمْ أَنْ يَعُدُّوا سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ، وَضَمِنْتَ لَهُمْ أَنْ لَا يَضِيعَ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِهِمْ؟ ثُمَّ مَضَى وَمَضَيْنَا مَعَهُ حَتَّى أَتَى حَلْقَةً مِنْ تِلْكَ الْحِلَقِ، فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالَ: مَا هَذَا الَّذِي أَرَاكُمْ تَصْنَعُونَ؟، قَالُوا: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ حَصًا نَعُدُّ بِهِ التَّكْبِيرَ، وَالتَّهْلِيلَ، وَالتَّسْبِيحَ، قَالَ:"فَعُدُّوا سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ، فَأَنَا ضَامِنٌ أَنْ لَا يَضِيعَ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِكُمْ شَيْءٌ، وَيْحَكُمْ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ، مَا أَسْرَعَ هَلَكَتَكُمْ! هَؤُلَاءِ صَحَابَةُ نَبِيِّكُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُتَوَافِرُونَ، وَهَذِهِ ثِيَابُهُ لَمْ تَبْلَ، وَآنِيَتُهُ لَمْ تُكْسَرْ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، إِنَّكُمْ لَعَلَى مِلَّةٍ هِيَ أَهْدَى مِنْ مِلَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ، أَوْ مُفْتَتِحُو بَابِ ضَلَالَةٍ"، قَالُوا: وَاللَّهِ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، مَا أَرَدْنَا إِلَّا الْخَيْرَ، قَالَ:"وَكَمْ مِنْ مُرِيدٍ لِلْخَيْرِ لَنْ يُصِيبَهُ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَدَّثَنَا أَنَّ قَوْمًا يَقْرَؤُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ مَا أَدْرِي لَعَلَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ مِنْكُمْ"، ثُمَّ تَوَلَّى عَنْهُمْ، فَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ سَلَمَةَ: رَأَيْنَا عَامَّةَ أُولَئِكَ الْحِلَقِ يُطَاعِنُونَا يَوْمَ النَّهْرَوَانِ مَعَ الْخَوَارِجِ.
