Chapter: The Prohibition Of Soothsaying And Going To Soothsayers

باب تَحْرِيمِ الْكِهَانَةِ وَإِتْيَانِ الْكُهَّانِ
Sahih Muslim 2229a
Abdullah Ibn Abbas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported, a person from the Ansar who was amongst the Companions of Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) reported to me, as we were sitting during the night with Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), a meteor shot gave a dazzling light. Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, what did you say in the pre-Islamic days when there was such a shot (of meteor)? They said, Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) know best (the actual position), but we, however, used to say that, that very night a great man had been born and a great man had died, whereupon Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, (these meteors) are shot neither at the death of anyone nor on the birth of anyone. Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, issues Command when He decides to do a thing. Then (the Angels) supporting the Throne sing His glory, then sing the dwellers of heaven who are near to them until this glory of God reaches them who are in the heaven of this world. Then those who are near the supporters of the Throne ask these supporters of the Throne, what your Lord has said? And they accordingly inform them what He says. Then the dwellers of heaven seek information from them until this information reaches the heaven of the world. In this process of transmission (the jinn snatches) what he manages to overhear, and he carries it to his friends. And when the Angels see the jinn, they attack them with meteors. If they narrate only which they manage to snatch that is correct, but they alloy it with lies and make additions to it.
حضرت عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں، مجھے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ایک انصاری صحابی نے بتلایا، اس اثناء میں کہ وہ ایک رات رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ بیٹھے ہوئے تھے، ایک ستارہ پھینکا گیا اور اس کی روشنی پھیل گئی تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ان سے پوچھا: ”جاہلیت کے دور میں اس طرح تارہ ٹوٹتا تو تم کیا کہتے تھے؟“ انہوں نے جواب دیا، اصل حقیقت اللہ اور اس کے رسول کو خوب معلوم ہے، ہم کہتے تھے، آج رات کوئی عظیم آدمی پیدا ہوا ہے اور ایک عظیم آدمی فوت ہوا ہے تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”واقعہ یہ ہے، اسے کسی کی موت یا کسی کی زندگی کے لیے نہیں پھینکا جاتا، یعنی کسی کی موت و حیات پر ستارہ نہیں ٹوٹتا، لیکن ہمارا برکت والا رب، جس کا نام بلند و بالا ہے، جب کسی کام کا فیصلہ فرماتا ہے تو عرش کے اٹھانے والے فرشتے سبحان اللہ کہتے ہیں، پھر ان کے قریشی آسمان والے تسبیح پڑھتے ہیں، حتیٰ کہ یہ تسبیح اس قریبی آسمان والوں تک پہنچ جاتی ہے، پھر حاملین عرش سے قریب والے فرشتے ان حاملین عرش سے دریافت کرتے ہیں، تمہارے رب نے کیا فرمایا ہے؟ تو وہ انہیں جو اس نے فرمایا ہوتا ہے، اس سے آگاہ کرتے ہیں۔ تو آسمانوں والے ایک دوسرے سے پوچھتے ہیں، حتیٰ کہ خبر اس قریبی آسمان تک پہنچ جاتی ہے تو جن چوری چھپے بات اچکتے ہیں اور اسے اپنے دوستوں کی طرف پھینکتے ہیں اور انہیں ستارے پڑتے ہیں تو جو وہ صحیح صورت میں بتاتے ہیں، وہ حق ہوتی ہے، لیکن وہ اس میں ملاوٹ کرتے ہیں اور اضافہ کرتے ہیں۔“
Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (Razi Allahu Anhu) bayan karte hain, mujhe Nabi Akram (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke ek Ansari Sahabi ne batlaya, is asna mein ke woh ek raat Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke sath baithe hue the, ek sitarah phenka gaya aur uski roshni phail gai to Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne un se poocha: "Jahiliyat ke daur mein is tarah tarah toot'ta to tum kya kehte the?" Unhon ne jawab diya, asal haqeeqat Allah aur uske Rasool ko khoob maloom hai, hum kehte the, aaj raat koi azeem aadmi paida hua hai aur ek azeem aadmi faut hua hai to Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne farmaya: "Waqia yeh hai, use kisi ki maut ya kisi ki zindagi ke liye nahi phenka jata, yani kisi ki maut o hayat par sitarah nahi toot'ta, lekin hamara barkat wala Rab, jiska naam buland o bala hai, jab kisi kaam ka faisla farmata hai to Arsh ke uthane wale farishte Subhan Allah kehte hain, phir unke quraishi asman wale tasbeeh padhte hain, hatta ke yeh tasbeeh us qareebi asman walon tak pahunch jati hai, phir Haamileen-e-Arsh se qareeb wale farishte un Haamileen-e-Arsh se daryaft karte hain, tumhare Rab ne kya farmaya hai? To woh unhen jo usne farmaya hota hai, us se aagah karte hain. To asmanon wale ek doosre se poochte hain, hatta ke khabar is qareebi asman tak pahunch jati hai to jin chori chhupe baat uchakte hain aur use apne doston ki taraf phenkte hain aur unhen sitare padte hain to jo woh sahih surat mein batate hain, woh haq hoti hai, lekin woh us mein milawat karte hain aur izafa karte hain."
حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْحُلْوَانِيُّ، وَعَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، قَالَ حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، وَقَالَ، عَبْدٌ حَدَّثَنِي يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنْ صَالِحٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي رَجُلٌ، مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ أَنَّهُمْ بَيْنَمَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ لَيْلَةً مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم رُمِيَ بِنَجْمٍ فَاسْتَنَارَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " مَاذَا كُنْتُمْ تَقُولُونَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ إِذَا رُمِيَ بِمِثْلِ هَذَا " . قَالُوا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ كُنَّا نَقُولُ وُلِدَ اللَّيْلَةَ رَجُلٌ عَظِيمٌ وَمَاتَ رَجُلٌ عَظِيمٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " فَإِنَّهَا لاَ يُرْمَى بِهَا لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَكِنْ رَبُّنَا تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى اسْمُهُ إِذَا قَضَى أَمْرًا سَبَّحَ حَمَلَةُ الْعَرْشِ ثُمَّ سَبَّحَ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ التَّسْبِيحُ أَهْلَ هَذِهِ السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا ثُمَّ قَالَ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَ حَمَلَةَ الْعَرْشِ لِحَمَلَةِ الْعَرْشِ مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ فَيُخْبِرُونَهُمْ مَاذَا قَالَ - قَالَ - فَيَسْتَخْبِرُ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ السَّمَوَاتِ بَعْضًا حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْخَبَرُ هَذِهِ السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا فَتَخْطَفُ الْجِنُّ السَّمْعَ فَيَقْذِفُونَ إِلَى أَوْلِيَائِهِمْ وَيُرْمَوْنَ بِهِ فَمَا جَاءُوا بِهِ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فَهُوَ حَقٌّ وَلَكِنَّهُمْ يَقْرِفُونَ فِيهِ وَيَزِيدُونَ " .
