It was narrated that Abu Masud ( رضي الله تعالى عنه) said : "The Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said : 'Let the one who has most knowledge of the Book of Allah lead the people in prayer. If they are equal in terms of knowledge of the Quran, let the one who emigrated first (lead them). If they are equal in terms of emigration, let the one who has more knowledge of the Sunnah, (lead them). If they are equal in terms of knowledge of the Sunnah, let the one who is oldest (lead them). Do not lead a man in prayer in his place of authority, and do not sit in his place of honor, unless he gives you permission."'

ابومسعود (عقبہ بن عمرو) رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: لوگوں کی امامت وہ کرے جسے اللہ کی کتاب ( قرآن مجید ) سب سے زیادہ یاد ہو، اور سب سے اچھا پڑھتا ہو ۱؎، اور اگر قرآن پڑھنے میں سب برابر ہوں تو جس نے ان میں سے سب پہلے ہجرت کی ہے وہ امامت کرے، اور اگر ہجرت میں بھی سب برابر ہوں تو جو سنت کا زیادہ جاننے والا ہو وہ امامت کرے ۲؎، اور اگر سنت ( کے جاننے ) میں بھی برابر ہوں تو جو ان میں عمر میں سب سے بڑا ہو وہ امامت کرے، اور تم ایسی جگہ آدمی کی امامت نہ کرو جہاں اس کی سیادت و حکمرانی ہو، اور نہ تم اس کی مخصوص جگہ ۳؎ پر بیٹھو، إلا یہ کہ وہ تمہیں اجازت دیدے ۴؎۔
Abu Mas'ud (Uqbah bin 'Amr) (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Logon ki imamat woh kare jise Allah ki kitab (Quran Majeed) sab se zyada yaad ho, aur sab se acha padhta ho 1, aur agar Quran padhne mein sab barabar hon to jisne un mein se sab pehle hijrat ki hai woh imamat kare, aur agar hijrat mein bhi sab barabar hon to jo sunnat ka zyada jannewala ho woh imamat kare 2, aur agar sunnat (ke jannew) mein bhi barabar hon to jo un mein umr mein sab se bada ho woh imamat kare, aur tum aisi jagah aadmi ki imamat nah karo jahan us ki siadat wa hukmarani ho, aur nah tum us ki maksood jagah 3 per betho, illa ye ke woh tumhein ijazat de 4.
أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ، عَنْ أَوْسِ بْنِ ضَمْعَجٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ فِي الْهِجْرَةِ فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْهِجْرَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالسُّنَّةِ فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي السُّنَّةِ سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ سِنًّا وَلاَ تَؤُمَّ الرَّجُلَ فِي سُلْطَانِهِ وَلاَ تَقْعُدْ عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِهِ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَكَ " .
