It was narrated that Abu Mas'ad Al-Ansari (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to gently pat our shoulders (to make sure the row was straight) at the time of prayer, and he would say : 'Keep (the rows) straight; do not differ from one another lest your hearts should suffer from discord. Let those who are mature and wise stand closest to me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them."'

ابومسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ ہمارے مونڈھوں پہ ہاتھ پھیرتے ۱؎ اور فرماتے: صفیں سیدھی رکھو، اختلاف نہ کرو ۲؎ ورنہ تمہارے دلوں میں بھی اختلاف پیدا ہو جائے گا، اور تم میں سے جو ہوش مند اور باشعور ہوں مجھ سے قریب رہیں، پھر ( اس وصف میں ) وہ جو ان سے قریب ہوں، پھر وہ جو ان سے قریب ہوں ۔
Abu Mas'ud (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) hamare mondhon pe hath phirte 1؎ aur farmate: Safain sidhi rakho, ikhtilaf na karo 2؎ warna tumhare dilon mein bhi ikhtilaf paida ho jaega, aur tum mein se jo hosh mand aur basha'ur hon mujh se qareeb rahain, phir ( is wasf mein ) woh jo un se qareeb hon, phir woh jo un se qareeb hon.
أَخْبَرَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَمْسَحُ عَوَاتِقَنَا وَيَقُولُ " اسْتَوُوا وَلاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَلْيَلِيَنِّي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الأَحْلاَمِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ " .
