Al-Ahnaf bin Qais narrated, ‘we set out as pilgrims and came to Al-Madinah intending to perform Hajj. While we were in our camping place unloading our mounts, someone came to us and said, ‘the people have gathered in the Masjid and there is panic.’ So we set out and found the people gathered around a group in the middle of the Masjid, among whom were Ali, Zubayr, Talhah and Sa'd bin Abi Waqas (رضي الله تعالی عنہم). While we were like that, Uthman (رضي الله تعالى عنه), came, wearing a yellow cloak with which he had covered his head. He said, ‘is Talhah here? Is Az-Zubair here? Is Sa'd here?’ They said, ‘yes.’ He said, ‘I adjure you be the one beside whom there is none worthy of worship, din't the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) say, ‘whoever buys the Mirbad (a place for drying dates) of Banu so-and so, Allah will forgive him, and I bought it for twenty or twenty-five thousand, then I came to the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and told him, and he said, ‘add it to our Masjid and the reward for it will be yours?’ They said, ‘By Allah, yes.’ He again said, ‘I adjure you by the one beside whom there is none worthy of worship, didn't the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) say that whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him, so I bought it for such and such and amount, then I came to the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and told him, and he said, ‘give it to provide water for the Muslims, and the reward for it will be yours?’ They said, ‘By Allah, yes.’ He again said, ‘I adjure you by the one beside whom there is none worthy of 46 worship, didn't the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) say that whoever equips these (men), meaning the army of Al-Usrah (Tabuk), Allah will forgive him, so I equipped them until they were not lacking even a rope or a bridle?’ They said, ‘By Allah, yes.’ He said, ‘O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness.’

احنف بن قیس کہتے ہیں کہ ہم حاجی لوگ نکلے، اور مدینہ پہنچے، ہمارا ارادہ صرف حج کا تھا ہم ابھی اپنا سامان اتار کر اپنے ڈیروں میں رکھ ہی رہے تھے کہ ایک آنے والا ہمارے پاس آیا اور اس نے بتایا کہ لوگ مسجد میں اکٹھا ہو رہے ہیں، اور گھبرائے ہوئے ہیں، ہم بھی وہاں پہنچے دیکھا کہ لوگ بیچ مسجد میں کچھ ( اکابر ) صحابہ کو گھیرے ہوئے ہیں، ان میں علی، زبیر، طلحہ اور سعد بن ابی وقاص ( رضی اللہ عنہم ) ہیں، ہم ابھی یہ دیکھ ہی رہے تھے کہ اتنے میں عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ پیلی چادر پہنے ہوئے اور اسی سے اپنا سر ڈھانپے ہوئے تشریف لائے ۱؎، اور کہا: کیا یہاں طلحہ ہیں؟ کیا یہاں زبیر ہیں؟ کیا یہاں سعد ہیں؟ لوگوں نے کہا: جی ہاں ہیں، تو انہوں نے کہا: میں تم سب سے اس اللہ کی قسم دلا کر پوچھتا ہوں جس کے سوا کوئی معبود برحق نہیں: کیا تمہیں معلوم ہے کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا تھا: ”جو شخص بنی فلاں کا کھلیان ( مسجد نبوی کے قریب کی زمین ) خرید کر مسجد کے لیے وقف کر دے گا اللہ تعالیٰ اس کی مغفرت فرما دے گا“ تو میں نے اسے بیس ہزار یا پچیس ہزار میں خرید لیا۔ پھر رسول اللہ ﷺ کے پاس آ کر آپ کو بتایا تو آپ نے فرمایا: ”اسے ہماری مسجد میں شامل کر دو، اس کا ثواب تمہیں ملے گا“ ( چنانچہ میں نے ایسا ہی کیا ) لوگوں نے کہا: اے ہمارے رب! ہاں یہ سچ ہے۔ انہوں نے ( پھر ) کہا: میں تم سب سے اس اللہ کی قسم دلا کر پوچھتا ہوں جس کے سوا کوئی حقیقی معبود نہیں: کیا تم لوگ جانتے ہو کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”جو شخص رومہ کا کنواں خریدے گا، اللہ اس کی مغفرت فرما دے گا“، تو میں نے اسے اتنے اور اتنے میں خریدا اور رسول اللہ ﷺ کے پاس آ کر آپ کو بتایا کہ میں نے اتنے اور اتنے میں اسے خرید لیا ہے، آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”اسے مسلمانوں کے پانی پینے کے لیے ( وقف ) کر دو، اس کا اجر تمہیں ملے گا“، ( تو میں نے اسے مسلمانوں کے پینے کے لیے عام کر دیا ) ، لوگوں نے کہا: اے ہمارے رب! ہاں ( یہ سچ ہے ) ، انہوں نے پھر کہا: میں تم سب سے اس اللہ کی قسم دلا کر پوچھتا ہوں جس کے سوا کوئی حقیقی معبود نہیں ہے: کیا تمہیں معلوم ہے کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے لوگوں کے چہروں پر نگاہ ڈال کر کہا تھا جو کوئی انہیں ( تنگی و محتاجی والی فوج کو ) ضروریات جنگ سے مسلح کر دے گا اللہ تعالیٰ اسے بخش دے گا، میں نے اس لشکر کو ہر طرح سے مسلح کر دیا یہاں تک کہ رسی اور نکیل کی بھی انہیں ضرورت نہ رہی۔ لوگوں نے کہا اے ہمارے رب! ہاں ( یہ سچ ہے ) ۔ انہوں نے کہا: اے اللہ! تو گواہ رہ، اے اللہ! تو گواہ رہ، اے اللہ! تو گواہ رہ۔
Ahnaf bin Qais kehte hain ke hum haaji log nikle aur Madinah pahunche, hamara irada sirf Hajj ka tha hum abhi apna saman utar kar apne deron mein rakh hi rahe the ke ek aane wala hamare pass aya aur usne bataya ke log Masjid mein ikkatha ho rahe hain aur ghabraye hue hain, hum bhi waha pahunche dekha ke log beech Masjid mein kuchh (akabar) Sahaba ko ghere hue hain, in mein Ali, Zubair, Talha aur Saad bin Abi Waqas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) hain, hum abhi yeh dekh hi rahe the ke itne mein Usman (رضي الله تعالى عنه) peeli chadar pahne hue aur usi se apna sar dhanpe hue tashrif laye 1؎, aur kaha: kya yahaan Talha hain? kya yahaan Zubair hain? kya yahaan Saad hain? Logon ne kaha: ji haan hain, to unhon ne kaha: main tum sab se is Allah ki qasam dila kar poochhta hun jis ke siwa koi Ma'bud barhaq nahin: kya tumhen maloom hai ke Rasul-Allah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam ne farmaya tha: ''jo shakhs Bani Falaan ka khilaan (Masjid-e-Nabawi ke qareeb ki zameen) khareed kar Masjid ke liye waqf kar dega Allah Ta'ala us ki maghfirat farma dega'' to main ne use bees hazaar ya pachchis hazaar mein khareed liya. Phir Rasul-Allah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam ke pass aa kar aap ko bataya to aap ne farmaya: ''ise humari Masjid mein shamil kar do, is ka sawab tumhen milega'' (chanaanch mein ne aisa hi kiya) Logon ne kaha: aey hamare Rab! haan yeh sach hai. Unhon ne (phir) kaha: main tum sab se is Allah ki qasam dila kar poochhta hun jis ke siwa koi haqiqi Ma'bud nahin: kya tum log jaante ho ke Rasul-Allah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam ne farmaya: ''jo shakhs Roma ka kunwan kharedega, Allah us ki maghfirat farma dega'', to main ne use itne aur itne mein khareeda aur Rasul-Allah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam ke pass aa kar aap ko bataya ke main ne itne aur itne mein use khareed liya hai, aap Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam ne farmaya: ''ise musalmanon ke pani peene ke liye (waqf) kar do, is ka ajr tumhen milega'', (to main ne use musalmanon ke peene ke liye aam kar diya), Logon ne kaha: aey hamare Rab! haan (yeh sach hai), Unhon ne phir kaha: main tum sab se is Allah ki qasam dila kar poochhta hun jis ke siwa koi haqiqi Ma'bud nahin hai: kya tumhen maloom hai ke Rasul-Allah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam ne logon ke chehron par nigah daal kar kaha tha jo koi unhen (tangai w muhtaaji wali fauj ko) zaruriyat jang se musallah kar dega Allah Ta'ala usse bakhsh dega, main ne is lashkar ko har tarah se musallah kar diya yahaan tak ke rasi aur nikal ki bhi unhen zarurat na rahi. Logon ne kaha aey hamare Rab! haan (yeh sach hai). Unhon ne kaha: aey Allah! to gawaah raah, aey Allah! to gawaah raah, aey Allah! to gawaah raah.
