It was narrated that Abu Al-Muthanna, the Mu'adh-dhin of the Jami' Masjid, said : "I asked Ibn 'Umar (رضئ للا تعالی عنہ) about the Adhan and he said : 'At the time of the Apostle of Allah (صلى للا عليه و آله وسلم), the phrases of the Adhan were recited twice and the phrases of Iqamah once, except that you should say (the phrase) - ِقَدْ قَامَت ُالصَّالَة [prayer is about to begin] twice. When we heard 'prayer is about to begin' we would perform Wudu' and go out to pray.'"

جامع مسجد کے مؤذن ابو مثنیٰ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہم سے اذان کے متعلق پوچھا، تو انہوں نے کہا: رسول اللہ ﷺ کے زمانے میں اذان دوہری اور اقامت اکہری ہوتی تھی، البتہ جب آپ «قد قامت الصلاة» کہتے تو اسے دو بار کہتے، چنانچہ جب ہم «قد قامت الصلاة» سن لیتے، تو وضو کرتے پھر ہم نماز کے لیے نکلتے ۔
Jami Masjid ke Mu'azin Abu Muthanna kehte hain ke main ne 'Abd Allah bin 'Umar Radi Allah anhum se Azan ke muta'alliq poochha, to unhon ne kaha: Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke zamanay main Azan dohari aur Iqamat ekhari hoti thi, balke jab aap «Qa'd Qamat al-Salah» kehte to isay do bar kehte, chananch jab hum «Qa'd Qamat al-Salah» sun lete, to wuzu karte phir hum namaz ke liye nikalte 1؎.
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ، مُؤَذِّنَ مَسْجِدِ الْعُرْيَانِ عَنْ أَبِي الْمُثَنَّى، مُؤَذِّنِ مَسْجِدِ الْجَامِعِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ عَنِ الأَذَانِ، فَقَالَ كَانَ الأَذَانُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَثْنَى مَثْنَى وَالإِقَامَةُ مَرَّةً مَرَّةً إِلاَّ أَنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاَةُ قَالَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ فَإِذَا سَمِعْنَا قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاَةُ تَوَضَّأْنَا ثُمَّ خَرَجْنَا إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ .
