Chapter: Prohibition of Khamr

باب تَحْرِيمِ الْخَمْرِ
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5540
It was narrated from Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that when the prohibition of wine was revealed, he said, O Apostle of Allah, give us a clear ruling on wine,’ and the Verse in Al-Baqarah was revealed. َِ وَإِثْمُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ نِ ۖ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْمَيْسِريَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرفْعِهِمَا [ They ask you about intoxicants and gambling: say, 'There is great sin in both, and some benefit for people. (But) the sin is greater than the benefit.] (Al-Baqara – 219. Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) was called, and it was recited to him. Then Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said, ‘O Allah, give us a clear ruling on wine,’ and the Verse of Sura An-Nisa' was revealed – َٰ تَعْلَمُوا مَا تٰ حَتَّىَ ىَ ةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَ بُوا الصَّالَ تَقْريَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ال َقُولُون [O' Believers, do not pray when you are intoxicated; instead, wait until you can understand what you are saying.] (An-Nisa – 43). And when the Iqamah for prayer was said, the caller of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) would call, ‘O Believers, do not pray when you are intoxicated.’ Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) was called, and this was recited to him. Then he said, ‘O Allah, give us a clear ruling on wine.’ Then the Verse in Surat Al-Ma'idah was revealed. يَا أَيُّهَاالَّذِينَ آمَنُو ٌُ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تِ جْسَ مُ رْ الْ َزْ َنْصَابُ وَاألا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَاأل َفْلِحُون- ِْ يدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَنإِنَّمَا يُر ِيُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَ ةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِي الْخَمْر ََ ةِ ۖ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَّ ِ وَعَنِ الصَّالِ َّللاِ وَ يَصُدَّكُمْ عَنْ ذِكْروَالْمَيْسِر [ O' believers indeed, intoxicants, gambling, (sacrificing on) stone alters (of idols), and the arrows you use for divination, are all acts of Satan. Keep away from them so that you may be successful. Satan only wishes to create enmity among you and hatred through wine and gambling, and to divert you from the remembrance of Allah and prayer. Will you therefore not desist?] (Al-Ma’idah: 90-91) and Umar ( رضي الله تعالى عنه) was called, and it was recited to him. When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) reached the words, [Will you therefore not abstain?], Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said, we have abstained, we have abstained.’

ابومیسرہ کہتے ہیں کہ جب شراب کی حرمت نازل ( ہونے کو ) ہوئی تو عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے ( دعا میں ) کہا: اے اللہ! شراب کے بارے میں صاف صاف آگاہ فرما دے، اس پر سورۃ البقرہ کی آیت نازل ہوئی ۱؎ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو بلایا گیا اور انہیں یہ آیت پڑھ کر سنائی گئی، ( پھر بھی ) انہوں نے کہا: اے اللہ! شراب کے بارے میں صاف صاف آگاہ فرما دے، اس پر سورۃ نساء کی یہ آیت نازل ہوئی «يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تقربوا الصلاة وأنتم سكارى» ”اے ایمان والو! جب تم نشے کی حالت میں تو نماز کے قریب نہ جاؤ“ ( النساء: ۴۳ ) ، چنانچہ رسول اللہ ﷺ کا منادی جب اقامت کہتا تو زور سے پکارتا: نشے کی حالت میں نماز کے قریب نہ جاؤ، پھر عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو بلایا گیا اور انہیں پڑھ کر یہ آیت سنائی گئی، ( پھر بھی ) انہوں نے کہا: اللہ! شراب کے بارے میں ہمیں صاف صاف آگاہ فرما دے، اس پر سورۃ المائدہ کی آیت نازل ہوئی ۲؎، پھر عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو بلا کر یہ آیت انہیں سنائی گئی، جب «فهل أنتم منتهون» پر پہنچے تو عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: ہم باز آئے، ہم باز آئے۔
Abu Maysarah kahte hain keh jab sharaab ki hurmat nazil (hone ko) hui to Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ne (dua mein) kaha: Aye Allah! Sharaab ke baare mein saaf saaf aagah farma de, is par Surah Al-Baqarah ki ayat nazil hui 1. Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ko bulaya gaya aur unhen yeh ayat parh kar sunai gai, (phir bhi) unhon ne kaha: Aye Allah! Sharaab ke baare mein saaf saaf aagah farma de, is par Surah An-Nisa ki yeh ayat nazil hui "Ya ayyuhal-lazeena aamanu la taqrabus-salata wa antum sukara", chunancha Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam ka munaddi jab aqamat kahta to zor se pukarta: Nashe ki halat mein namaz ke qareeb na jao, phir Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ko bulaya gaya aur unhen parh kar yeh ayat sunai gai, (phir bhi) unhon ne kaha: Allah! Sharaab ke baare mein hamen saaf saaf aagah farma de, is par Surah Al-Ma'idah ki ayat nazil hui 2, phir Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ko bula kar yeh ayat unhen sunai gai, jab "Fa hal antum muntahoon" par pahunche to Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ne kaha: Hum baz aye, hum baz aye.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ السُّنِّيُّ قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا الإِمَامُ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ النَّسَائِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي مَيْسَرَةَ عَنْ عُمَرَ رضى الله عنه قَالَ لَمَّا نَزَلَ تَحْرِيمُ الْخَمْرِ قَالَ عُمَرُ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانًا شَافِيًا. فَنَزَلَتِ الآيَةُ الَّتِي فِي الْبَقَرَةِ فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانًا شَافِيًا. فَنَزَلَتِ الآيَةُ الَّتِي فِي النِّسَاءِ { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لاَ تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلاَةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَى } فَكَانَ مُنَادِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا أَقَامَ الصَّلاَةَ نَادَى لاَ تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلاَةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَى فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانًا شَافِيًا. فَنَزَلَتِ الآيَةُ الَّتِي فِي الْمَائِدَةِ فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ { فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ } قَالَ عُمَرُ رضى الله عنه انْتَهَيْنَا انْتَهَيْنَا.
