The Words of al-Hasan al-Basri
كَلَامُ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ

Hazrat Hasan said: "Scholars are of three types. Some scholars are those who are scholars for themselves and for others. These are the best and most virtuous of scholars. And some scholars are those who are scholars for themselves. These are also good. And some scholars are those who are neither scholars for themselves nor for anyone else. These are the worst of scholars."
حضرت حسن فرماتے ہیں۔ علماء تین طرح کے ہیں۔ بعض وہ علماء ہیں جو اپنے نفس کے لیے اور دوسروں کے لیے عالم ہیں۔ یہ علماء میں سے افضل اور بہتر ہیں۔ اور بعض وہ علماء ہیں جو اپنے نفس کے لیے عالم ہیں۔ یہ بھی بہتر ہیں۔ اور بعض علماء وہ ہیں جو نہ اپنے نفس کے لیے ہیں اور نہ کسی غیر کے لیے۔ یہ علماء میں سے بدترین ہیں۔
Hazrat Hassan farmate hain. Ulama teen tarah ke hain. Baz woh ulama hain jo apne nafs ke liye aur dusron ke liye alim hain. Ye ulama mein se afzal aur behtar hain. Aur baz woh ulama hain jo apne nafs ke liye alim hain. Ye bhi behtar hain. Aur baz ulama woh hain jo na apne nafs ke liye hain aur na kisi ghair ke liye. Ye ulama mein se badtareen hain.
عَفَّانُ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَقِيلٍ بَشِيرُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ : " الْعُلَمَاءُ ثَلَاثَةٌ : مِنْهُمْ عَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ وَلِغَيْرِهِ فَذَلِكَ أَفْضَلُهُمْ وَخَيْرُهُمْ ، وَمِنْهُمْ عَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ فَحَسَنٌ ، وَمِنْهُمْ عَالِمٌ لَا لِنَفْسِهِ وَلَا لِغَيْرِهِ فَذَلِكَ شَرُّهُمْ "
