Ibn Abdullah bin Mughaffal narrated: While I was praying, I said: Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficent. My father heard me and said: O my son this is a newly invented matter, beware of the newly-invented.' He (Ibn Abdullah) said: I have not seen any one of the Companions of Allah's Messenger who hated a newly invented matter in Islam more than him. And he said: 'Ihave performed Salat with the Prophet, and with Abu Bakr, and Umar, and with Uthman. I did not hear any one of them saying it. So do not say it. When you are performing Salat say: Al-Hamdu lilahi Rabbil-Alamin All praise is due to Allah the Lord of all that exists.' Imam Tirmidhi says: 1- The Hadith of Abdullah bin Mu'ghaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) is Hasan, 2- Among the Companions, which include Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali (may Allah be pleased with them), and others, and among the Tabi'een who followed them, most of the people of knowledge act upon this. This is also stated by Sufyan al-Thawri, Ibn Ma'in, Ahmad, and Ishaq bin Rahwayh. These people do not consider it correct to say "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim" aloud; rather, they say that a person should say it in his heart.

عبداللہ بن مغفل رضی الله عنہ کے بیٹے کہتے ہیں کہ میرے والد نے مجھے نماز میں «بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم» کہتے سنا تو انہوں نے مجھ سے کہا: بیٹے! یہ بدعت ہے، اور بدعت سے بچو۔ میں نے رسول اللہ ﷺ کے اصحاب میں سے کسی کو نہیں دیکھا جو ان سے زیادہ اسلام میں بدعت کا مخالف ہو، میں نے نبی اکرم ﷺ کے ساتھ، ابوبکر کے ساتھ، عمر کے ساتھ اور عثمان رضی الله عنہم کے ساتھ نماز پڑھی ہے لیکن میں نے ان میں سے کسی کو اسے ( اونچی آواز سے ) کہتے نہیں سنا، تو تم بھی اسے نہ کہو ۱؎، جب تم نماز پڑھو تو قرأت «الحمد لله رب العالمين» سے شروع کرو۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- عبداللہ بن مغفل رضی الله عنہ کی حدیث حسن ہے، ۲- صحابہ جن میں ابوبکر، عمر، عثمان، علی رضی اللہ عنہم وغیرہ شامل ہیں اور ان کے بعد کے تابعین میں سے اکثر اہل علم کا عمل اسی پر ہے، اور یہی سفیان ثوری، ابن مبارک، احمد اور اسحاق بن راہویہ بھی کہتے ہیں، یہ لوگ «بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم» زور سے کہنے کو درست نہیں سمجھتے ( بلکہ ) ان کا کہنا ہے کہ آدمی اسے اپنے دل میں کہے ۲؎۔
“‘Abd-ul-laah bin Mughaffal radiya-Allahu ‘anhu ke bete kehte hain ke mere wald ne mujhe namaz mein «Bismillahi-r-rahmani-r-raheem» kehte suna to unhon ne mujh se kaha: Bete! yeh bid’at hai, aur bid’at se bacho. Main ne rasool-Allah salla-Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam ke ashab mein se kisi ko nahin dekha jo in se ziyada islam mein bid’at ka mukhalif ho, main ne Nabi-e-Akram salla-Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam ke sath, Abu Bakr ke sath, Umar ke sath aur Uthman radiya-Allahu ‘anhum ke sath namaz padhi hai lekin main ne in mein se kisi ko ise ( unchi aa-waaz se ) kehte nahin suna, to tum bhi ise nah keho 1؎, jab tum namaz padho to qira’at «al-hamdulillahi Rabbi-l-'alamin» se shuru karo. Imam Tirmidhi kehte hain: 1. ‘Abd-ul-laah bin Mughaffal radiya-Allahu ‘anhu ki hadees hasan hai, 2. Sahaba jin mein Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali radiya-Allahu ‘anhum waghaira shamil hain aur in ke ba’d ke tabi’in mein se aksar ahl-e-ilm ka amal isi par hai, aur yehi Sufyan Thauri, Ibn Mubarak, Ahmad aur Ishaq bin Rahawayah bhi kehte hain, yeh log «Bismillahi-r-rahmani-r-raheem» zor se kahne ko durust nahin samjhte ( balke ) in ka kahna hai ke aadam isse apne dil mein kahe 2؎.”
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ إِيَاسٍ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَبَايَةَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعَنِي أَبِي وَأَنَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ أَقُولُ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ سورة الفاتحة آية 1، فقال لِي: أَيْ بُنَيَّ مُحْدَثٌ، إِيَّاكَ وَالْحَدَثَ، قَالَ: وَلَمْ أَرَ أَحَدًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ أَبْغَضَ إِلَيْهِ الْحَدَثُ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ يَعْنِي مِنْهُ، قَالَ: وَقَدْ صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَمَعَ عُمَرَ وَمَعَ عُثْمَانَ، فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقُولُهَا فَلَا تَقُلْهَا، إِذَا أَنْتَ صَلَّيْتَ فَقُلْ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ سورة الفاتحة آية 2. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى: حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ، وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَيْهِ عِنْدَ أَكْثَرِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، مِنْهُمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرُ، وَعُثْمَانُ، وَعَلِيٌّ وَغَيْرُهُمْ وَمَنْ بَعْدَهُمْ مِنَ التَّابِعِينَ، وَبِهِ يَقُولُ: سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، وَابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، وَأَحْمَدُ، وَإِسْحَاق، لَا يَرَوْنَ أَنْ يَجْهَرَ بِ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ سورة الفاتحة آية 1، قَالُوا: وَيَقُولُهَا فِي نَفْسِهِ.
