Prescribed Punishments

Mujahid narrated ‘appointing a way in the verse - ًْ بَعَةِ شَةَ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمْ فَاسْتَشْهِدُوا عَلَيْهِن أَروَالال تِي يَأْتِينَ الْفَاح ُ لَهُن سَبِيْ يَجْعَلَ َّللاْ تُ أَومِنْكُمْ فَإِنْ شَهِدُوا فَأَمْسِكُوهُن فِي الْبُيُوتِ حَت ى يَتَوَف اهُن الْمَو ًلا [If any of your women is guilty of adultery, bring four of your witnesses to give evidence; if they testify against them, retain them in the houses until death overtakes them or Allah provides some other way for them.] (An-Nisa – 15), means prescribed punishment. Sufiyan said, ‘punish them (verse An-Noor – 2) ‘refers to unmarried, and ‘confine them to houses (verse An-Nisa – 15) refers to the women who are married.
