The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 1946
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the last hardship a Muslim will face is death. He also said that in the verse: "On the Day when the heaven will be like the dregs of oil" the word "muhli" refers to the sediment of olive oil that remains at the bottom. And "Ana al-Layl" means the middle of the night. And he said: Do you know what is meant by the disappearance of knowledge? It means the disappearance of scholars from the earth.

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما فرماتے ہیں کہ آخری وہ سختی جس سے مسلمان کا سامنا ہوگا، وہ موت ہے، نیز وہ فرماتے ہیں کہ «يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ» میں لفظ «مُهْلِ» سے مراد زیتون کے تیل کا وہ تلچھٹ ہے جو اس کے نیچے رہ جاتا ہے، اور «آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ» کا معنی رات کا درمیان ہے، اور فرمایا: کیا تم جانتے ہو کہ علم کے چلے جانے سے کیا مراد ہے؟ اس سے مراد زمین سے علماء کا چلے جانا ہے۔
Sayyida Ibn Abbas Raziallahu Anhuma farmate hain keh aakhri woh sakhti jis se musalman ka samna hoga, woh maut hai, neez woh farmate hain keh «Yawma takoonu assamaao kalmuhli» mein lafz «muhli» se murad zaitoon ke tel ka woh talchhat hai jo us ke neeche reh jata hai, aur «Ana allayli» ka maani raat ka darmiyaan hai, aur farmaya: kya tum jante ho keh ilm ke chale jane se kya murad hai? Is se murad zameen se ulama ka chale jana hai.
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ قَابُوسَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ:" آخِرُ شِدَّةٍ يَلْقَاهَا الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمَوْتُ، وَفِي قَوْلِهِ يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ سورة المعارج آية 8، قَالَ: كَدُرْدِيِّ الزَّيْتِ، وَفِي قَوْلِهِ آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ سورة آل عمران آية 113، قَالَ: جَوْفُ اللَّيْلِ، وَقَالَ: هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا ذَهَابُ الْعِلْمِ؟ قَالَ: هُوَ ذَهَابُ الْعُلَمَاءِ مِنَ الأَرْضِ".
