Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 19868
It is narrated on the authority of Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ended the afternoon prayer after offering only three rak'ahs. When the people drew his attention to it, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up and offered the remaining one rak'ah. Then he finished the prayer with the Salam and while sitting, he performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness (sajdah sahw) and then ended the prayer with the Salam again.

حضرت عمران بن حصین رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ نبی ﷺ نے عصر کی تین رکعتوں پر ہی سلام پھیر دیا، لوگوں کے توجہ دلانے پر نبی ﷺ نے کھڑے ہو کر چھوٹی ہوئی ایک رکعت پڑھائی اور سلام پھیر کر بیٹھے بیٹھے سہو کے دو سجدے کئے اور سلام پھیر دیا۔
Hazrat Imran bin Husain Raziallahu Anhu se marvi hai ki ek martaba Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne Asr ki teen rakato'n par hi salaam phair diya, logon ke tawajjah dilane par Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne kharay ho kar chhoti hui ek rakat parhayi aur salaam phair kar baithe baithe sahu ke do sajde kiye aur salaam phair diya.
حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُهَلَّبِ ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ , أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " صَلَّى ثَلَاثَ رَكَعَاتٍ، فَسَلَّمَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ، فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَةً، فَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ" .
