Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 21632
It is narrated by Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made a tent out of a mat in the mosque and prayed in it for several nights until people started gathering. When after a few days, the voice of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was not heard, the people thought that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had fallen asleep. So some people went near him and started coughing so that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would come out. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “I was watching this act of yours continuously, so much so that I feared that this prayer (Tahajjud) might become obligatory on you, because if this prayer became obligatory on you, you would not be able to observe it regularly. Therefore, O people! Offer your prayers in your homes because after the obligatory prayers, it is best for a person to offer other prayers at home."

حضرت زید بن ثابت رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ نبی کریم ﷺ نے مسجد میں چٹائی سے ایک خیمہ بنایا اور اس میں کئی راتیں نماز پڑھتے رہے حتٰی کہ لوگ بھی جمع ہونے لگے کچھ دنوں کے بعد نبی کریم ﷺ کی آواز نہیں آئی تو لوگوں کا خیال ہوا کہ شاید نبی کریم ﷺ سوگئے اس لئے کچھ لوگ اس کے قریب جا کر کھانسنے لگے تاکہ نبی کریم ﷺ باہر آجائیں، نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا میں مسلسل تمہارا یہ عمل دیکھ رہا تھا حتٰی کہ مجھے اندیشہ ہونے لگا کہ کہیں تم پر یہ نماز (تہجد) فرض نہ ہوجائے، کیونکہ اگر یہ نماز تم پر فرض ہوگئی تو تم اس کی پابندی نہ کرسکو گے اس لئے لوگو! اپنے اپنے گھروں میں نماز پڑھا کرو کیونکہ فرض نمازوں کو چھوڑ کر دوسری نمازیں گھر میں پڑھنا انسان کے لئے سب سے افضل ہے۔
Hazrat Zaid bin Sabit Raziallahu Anhu se marvi hai ki ek martaba Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne masjid mein chatai se ek khaima banaya aur us mein kai raatain namaz parhte rahe hatayi ke log bhi jama hone lage kuch dino ke baad Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki awaz nahi aai to logon ka khayal hua ke shayad Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) so gaye is liye kuch log us ke kareeb ja kar khansne lage taake Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) bahar aa jayen, Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya main musalsal tumhara ye amal dekh raha tha hatayi ke mujhe andesha hone laga ke kahin tum par ye namaz (tahajjud) farz na ho jaye, kyunki agar ye namaz tum par farz ho gayi to tum is ki pabandi na kar sako ge is liye logo! apne apne gharon mein namaz parha karo kyunki farz namaazon ko chhor kar dusri namazen ghar mein parhna insan ke liye sab se afzal hai.
حَدَّثَنَا مَكِّيٌّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ زَيْد بْنِ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ، قَالَ: احْتَجَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ حُجْرَةً، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَخْرُجُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ، فَيُصَلِّي فِيهَا، فَصَلَّوْا مَعَهُ بِصَلَاتِهِ يَعْنِي رِجَالًا، وَكَانُوا يَأْتُونَهُ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةٌ مِنَ اللَّيَالِي، لَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَتَنَحْنَحُوا وَرَفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَهُمْ، قَالَ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُغْضَبًا، قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: " أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، مَا زَالَ بِكُمْ صَنِيعُكُمْ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنْ سَيُكْتَبُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِالصَّلَاةِ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ، فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ صَلَاةِ الْمَرْءِ فِي بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا الصَّلَاةَ الْمَكْتُوبَةَ" .
