The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2652
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyidina Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out from Madinah intending to perform 'Umrah. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was fasting, but when he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached a place called 'Asfan, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called for a vessel and took it in his hand so that all the people could see. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) broke his fast. That is why Sayyidina Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that a traveler has the choice to either fast or not (and make it up later).

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ نبی ﷺ مکہ مکرمہ کے ارادے سے مدینہ منورہ سے روانہ ہوئے، آپ ﷺ نے روزہ رکھا ہوا تھا لیکن جب آپ مقام عسفان میں پہنچے تو آپ ﷺ نے ایک برتن منگوا کر اسے اپنے ہاتھ پر رکھا تاکہ سب لوگ دیکھ لیں، پھر روزہ ختم کر دیا۔ اس لئے سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما فرماتے تھے کہ مسافر کو اجازت ہے خواہ روزہ رکھے یا نہ رکھے (بعد میں قضاء کر لے)۔
Sayyidna Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anhuma se marvi hai keh Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam Makkah Mukarramah ke irade se Madina Munawwara se rawana hue, Aap Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ne roza rakha hua tha lekin jab Aap maqam Asfan mein pahunche to Aap Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ne ek bartan mangwa kar ise apne hath par rakha takkeh sab log dekh len, phir roza khatam kar diya. Is liye Sayyidna Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anhuma farmate the keh musafir ko ijazat hai chahe roza rakhe ya na rakhe (baad mein qaza kar le).
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ:" خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى مَكَّةَ، فَصَامَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ عُسْفَانَ، ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ، فَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى يَدِهِ لِيُرِيَهُ النَّاسَ، فَأَفْطَرَ حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ، وَذَلِكَ فِي رَمَضَانَ، وَكَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، يَقُولُ: قَدْ صَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَفْطَرَ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ".
