The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)
مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ رَضِيَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُمَا

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2712
Once, Marwan said to his doorkeeper, "O Rafi'! Go to Sayyidina Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, and ask him: If each of us who rejoices in the blessings he has received and desires praise for deeds he has not done, will be punished, then will we all be subject to punishment?" Sayyidina Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, replied, "What does this verse have to do with you? This verse was revealed concerning the People of the Book." Then, Sayyidina Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, recited this verse: "(Remember) when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture to make it known and clear to mankind..." [Al-Imran: 187] Then, he recited this verse: "Think not that those who exult in what they have brought and love to be praised for what they have not done - think not that they are in safety..." [Al-Imran: 188] And he said, "The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, asked them (the People of the Book) something, but they concealed it from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and disclosed it to others. When they left the presence of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, they thought that they had answered the question of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. They desired praise for that and were arrogant about having concealed the matter which the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had asked them."

ایک مرتبہ مروان نے اپنے دربان سے کہا: اے رافع! سیدنا عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کے پاس جاؤ اور ان سے عرض کرو کہ اگر ہم میں سے ہر شخص کو - جو خود کو ملنے والی نعمتوں پر خوش ہو اور یہ چاہے کہ جو کام اس نے نہیں کیا اس پر بھی اس کی تعریف کی جائے - عذاب ہوگا تو پھر ہم سب ہی عذاب میں مبتلا ہوں گے؟ سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے جواب میں فرمایا کہ تمہارا اس آیت سے کیا تعلق؟ اس آیت کا نزول تو اہل کتاب کے متعلق ہوا ہے، پھر سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے یہ آیت پڑھی: «﴿وَإِذْ أَخَذَ اللّٰهُ مِيثَاقَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ لَتُبَيِّنُنَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ﴾ [آل عمران: 187] » ”اس وقت کو یاد کیجئے جب اللہ نے اہل کتاب سے یہ وعدہ لیا تھا کہ تم اس کتاب کو لوگوں کے سامنے ضرور بیان کرو گے۔“ پھر یہ آیت تلاوت کی: «﴿لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا وَيُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يُحْمَدُوا بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا فَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّهُمْ . . . . .﴾ [آل عمران: 188] » ”جو لوگ خود کو ملنے والی نعمتوں پر اتراتے ہیں اور یہ چاہتے ہیں کہ جو کام انہوں نے نہیں کئے، ان پر بھی ان کی تعریف کی جائے، ان کے متعلق آپ یہ گمان نہ کریں . . . . .۔“ اور فرمایا کہ نبی ﷺ نے ان اہل کتاب سے کوئی بات پوچھی تھی لیکن انہوں نے نبی ﷺ سے اسے چھپایا اور دوسروں کو بتا دیا، جب وہ نبی ﷺ کے یہاں سے نکلے تو ان کا خیال یہ تھا کہ انہوں نے نبی ﷺ کے سوال کا جواب دے دیا ہے اور اس پر وہ داد چاہتے تھے اور اس بات پر اترا رہے تھے کہ انہوں نے بڑی احتیاط سے اس بات کو چھپا لیا جو نبی ﷺ نے ان سے پوچھی تھی۔
Ek martaba Marwan ne apne darban se kaha: Aye Rafi! Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ke paas jao aur unse arz karo ki agar hum mein se har shakhs ko - jo khud ko milne wali naimaton par khush ho aur ye chahe ki jo kaam usne nahin kiya us par bhi uski tareef ki jaye - azab hoga to phir hum sab hi azab mein mubtala honge? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ne jawab mein farmaya ki tumhara is aayat se kya taluq? Is aayat ka nuzul to ahle kitaab ke mutalliq hua hai, phir Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ne ye aayat parhi: «﴿Wa iz akhaz Allahu meethaqal lazeena ooto alkitabalatubayyinunnahu li alnnasi﴾ [Al-Imran: 187] » ”Is waqt ko yaad kijiye jab Allah ne ahle kitaab se ye wada liya tha ki tum is kitaab ko logon ke samne zaroor bayan karoge.“ Phir ye aayat tilawat ki: «﴿La tahsabanna allazeena yafrahuna bima ataw wa yuhibbuna an yuhamadoo bima lam yaf'aloo fala tahsabanna hum . . . . .﴾ [Al-Imran: 188] » ”Jo log khud ko milne wali naimaton par itrate hain aur ye chahte hain ki jo kaam unhon ne nahin kiye, un par bhi unki tareef ki jaye, unke mutalliq aap ye gumaan na karen . . . . .。“ Aur farmaya ki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne un ahle kitaab se koi baat puchhi thi lekin unhon ne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se use chhupaya aur dusron ko bata diya, jab wo Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke yahan se nikle to unka khayal ye tha ki unhon ne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke sawal ka jawab de diya hai aur us par wo daad chahte the aur is baat par utra rahe the ki unhon ne badi ehtiyat se is baat ko chhupa liya jo Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne unse puchhi thi.
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، أَنَّ حُمَيْدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ أَخْبَرَهُ , أَنَّ مَرْوَانَ قَالَ: اذْهَبْ يَا رَافِعُ، لِبَوَّابِهِ، إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقُلْ: لَئِنْ كَانَ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِنَّا فَرِحَ بِمَا أُوتِيَ، وَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يُحْمَدَ بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلْ مُعَذَّباً، لَنُعَذَّبَنَّ أَجْمَعُون! فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ :" وَمَا لَكُمْ وَهَذِهِ؟ إِنَّمَا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ فِي أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ، ثُمَّ تَلَا ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: وَإِذْ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ مِيثَاقَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ لَتُبَيِّنُنَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ سورة آل عمران آية 187 , هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ، وَتَلَا ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: لا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوْا وَيُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يُحْمَدُوا بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا سورة آل عمران آية 188 , وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: سَأَلَهُمْ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَكَتَمُوهُ إِيَّاهُ وَأَخْبَرُوهُ بِغَيْرِهِ، فَخَرَجُوا قَدْ أَرَوْهُ أَنْ قَدْ أَخْبَرُوهُ بِمَا سَأَلَهُمْ عَنْهُ، وَاسْتَحْمَدُوا بِذَلِكَ إِلَيْهِ، وَفَرِحُوا بِمَا أَتَوْا مِنْ كِتْمَانِهِمْ إِيَّاهُ مَا سَأَلَهُمْ عَنْهُ".
