The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 3248
Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): On the morning of Muzdalifah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me from his mount, "Come here and collect pebbles for me." I collected some pebbles that were like pottery shards. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took them in his hand and said, "Yes! The pebbles should be like these. Beware of extremism in religion, for the people before you were destroyed because of extremism in religion."

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ نبی ﷺ نے مزدلفہ کی صبح اپنی سواری پر سے مجھ سے فرمایا: ”ادھر آ کر میرے لئے کنکریاں چن کر لاؤ“، میں نے کچھ کنکریاں چنیں جو ٹھیکری کی تھیں، نبی ﷺ نے انہیں اپنے ہاتھ میں لے کر فرمایا: ”ہاں! اس طرح کی کنکریاں ہونی چاہئیں، دین میں غلو سے بچو، کیونکہ تم سے پہلے لوگ دین میں غلو کی وجہ سے ہلاک ہوگئے تھے۔“
Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne Muzdalifah ki subah apni sawari par se mujh se farmaya: "idhar aa kar mere liye kankriyan chun kar lao", maine kuch kankriyan chuni jo theekri ki thi, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne unhen apne hath me lekar farmaya: "haan! is tarah ki kankriyan honi chahiye, deen me ghulu se bacho, kyunki tum se pehle log deen me ghulu ki wajah se halaak hogaye the."
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ المعنى، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ ، حَدَّثَنِي زِيَادُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ الرِّيَاحِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ: يَحْيَى لَا يَدْرِي عَوْفٌ: عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، أَوْ الْفَضْلُ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَدَاةَ الْعَقَبَةِ، وَهُوَ وَاقِفٌ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ:" هَاتِ الْقُطْ لِي" فَلَقَطْتُ لَهُ حَصَيَاتٍ هُنَّ حَصَى الْخَذْفِ، فَوَضَعَهُنَّ فِي يَدِهِ، فَقَالَ:" بِأَمْثَالِ هَؤُلَاءِ" مَرَّتَيْنِ، وَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ فَأَشَارَ يَحْيَى أَنَّهُ رَفَعَهَا وَقَالَ:" إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُوَّ، فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِالْغُلُوِّ فِي الدِّينِ".
