Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 5217
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyidna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once a person asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the night prayer (Tahajjud). I was present between the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the questioner. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Pray two rak'ahs (units) at a time, and when you fear the dawn is approaching, then pray one rak'ah (unit) with those two as Witr." A year later, that person came again to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I was again present between them. He asked the same question, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave him the same reply.

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ ایک شخص نے نبی ﷺ سے رات کی نماز سے متعلق پوچھا، اس وقت میں نبی ﷺ اور سائل کے درمیان تھا، نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”تم دو دو رکعت کر کے نماز پڑھا کرو اور جب صبح ہو جانے کا اندیشہ ہو تو ان دو کے ساتھ بطور وتر کے ایک رکعت اور ملا لو“، ایک سال بعد دوبارہ وہ شخص نبی ﷺ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا، اس مرتبہ بھی میں نبی ﷺ اور اس کے درمیان تھا، اس نے وہی سوال کیا اور نبی ﷺ نے اسے وہی جواب دیا۔
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki ek martaba ek shakhs ne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se raat ki namaz se mutalliq pucha, us waqt main Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) aur sail ke darmiyan tha, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Tum do do rakat kar ke namaz parha karo aur jab subah ho jaane ka andesha ho to un do ke sath ba طور witr ke ek rakat aur mila lo", ek saal baad dobara woh shakhs Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki khidmat mein hazir hua, is martaba bhi main Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) aur uske darmiyan tha, usne wohi sawal kiya aur Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne use wohi jawab diya.
حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُدَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ، وَأَنَا بَيْنَ السَّائِلِ وَبَيْنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ:" مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِرَكْعَةٍ"، قَالَ: ثُمَّ جَاءَه عِنْدَ قَرْنِ الْحَوْلِ، وَأَنَا بِذَاكَ الْمَنْزِلِ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ السَّائِلِ، فَسَأَلَهُ، فَقَالَ:" مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِرَكْعَةٍ".
