Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 5531
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to take an oath of allegiance on the condition of listening and obeying. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say: "To the best of your ability (you will listen and obey wherever possible)."

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ نبی ﷺ بات سننے اور اطاعت کرنے کی شرط پر بیعت لیا کرتے تھے پھر فرماتے تھے کہ حسب استطاعت (جہاں تک ممکن ہو گا تم بات سنو گے اور مانو گے)۔
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) baat sunne aur itaat karne ki shart par bai'at liya karte the phir farmate the ki hasb-e-istata'at (jahan tak mumkin ho ga tum baat suno ge aur mano ge).
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ، يَقُولُ: كُنَّا إِذَا بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ يُلَقِّنُنَا هُوَ:" فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتَ".
