Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 6292
It is narrated by Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the people of the pre-Islamic period used to fast on the tenth of Muharram. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the Muslims also used to fast on this day before the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory. When the command for fasting in Ramadan was revealed, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "This is one of the days of Allah. Whoever wants can fast on this day and whoever wants can leave it."

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ اہل جاہلیت دس محرم کا روزہ رکھا کرتے تھے نبی کریم ﷺ اور مسلمان بھی ماہ رمضان کے روزے فرض ہونے سے پہلے یہ روزہ رکھتے تھے جب ماہ رمضان کے روزوں کا حکم نازل ہوا تو نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”یہ اللہ کے دنوں میں سے ایک دن ہے جو چاہے روزہ رکھ لے اور جو چاہے چھوڑ دے۔
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki ahl jahiliyat das muharram ka roza rakha karte the nabi kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) aur musalman bhi mah ramadan ke roze farz hone se pehle ye roza rakhte the jab mah ramadan ke rozon ka hukum nazil hua to nabi kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: ye Allah ke dinon mein se ek din hai jo chahe roza rakh le aur jo chahe chhor de.
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ , أَنَّ أَهْلَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ كَانُوا يَصُومُونَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ، وَأَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَامَهُ وَالْمُسْلِمُونَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُفْتَرَضَ رَمَضَانُ، فَلَمَّا افْتُرِضَ رَمَضَانُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:" إِنَّ عَاشُورَاءَ يَوْمٌ مِنْ أَيَّامِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى، فَمَنْ شَاءَ صَامَهُ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَهُ".
