Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 761
Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said that Witr prayer does not have definitive proof from the Holy Quran like the obligatory prayers, but its obligation is proven from the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ وتر فرض نماز کی طرح قرآن کریم سے حتمی ثبوت نہیں رکھتے، لیکن ان کا وجوب نبی ﷺ کی سنت سے ثابت ہے۔
Sayyidna Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) farmate hain ki witr farz namaz ki tarah Quran Kareem se hatmi saboot nahin rakhte, lekin in ka wujoob Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki sunnat se sabit hai.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ:" لَيْسَ الْوَتْرُ بِحَتْمٍ كَهَيْئَةِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَلَكِنْ سُنَّةٌ سَنَّهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ".
