The Musnad of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)
مسنَد اَبِی هرَیرَةَ رَضِیَ اللَّه عَنه
Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 9009
It is narrated in the previous Hadith that the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "O Messenger of Allah, what is backbiting?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Backbiting is to mention your brother in a way that he would dislike." Someone asked, "Tell us, if my brother possesses the fault that I mention in his absence, what is the ruling?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "If he possesses the fault that you mentioned, then you have backbitten him, and if he does not possess the fault that you mentioned, then you have slandered him."

گزشتہ سند ہی سے مروی ہے کہ نبی کریم ﷺ سے صحابہ کرام رضی اللہ عنہ نے دریافت کیا یا رسول اللہ! غیبت کیا ہے نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا غیبت یہ ہے کہ تم اپنے بھائی کا ذکر ایک ایسے عیب کے ساتھ کرو جو اس میں نہ ہو کسی نے پوچھا کہ یہ بتائیے اگر میرے بھائی میں وہ عیب موجود ہو جو میں اس کی غیر موجودگی میں بیان کروں تو کیا حکم ہے؟ نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا اگر تمہارا بیان کیا ہوا عیب اس میں موجود ہو تو تم نے اس کی غیبت کی اور اگر تمہارا بیان کیا ہوا عیب اس میں موجود نہ ہو تو تم نے اس پر بہتان باندھا۔
Guzishta sanad hi se marvi hai ke Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se sahaba kiram raziallahu anhum ne daryaft kiya Ya Rasulullah! Ghibat kya hai? Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya ghibat yeh hai ke tum apne bhai ka zikar ek aise aib ke sath karo jo usme na ho. Kisi ne poocha ke yeh bataiye agar mere bhai me wo aib maujood ho jo main uski ghair maujoodgi me bayan karoon to kya hukum hai? Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya agar tumhara bayan kiya hua aib usme maujood ho to tumne uski ghibat ki aur agar tumhara bayan kiya hua aib usme maujood na ho to tumne us par buhtan bandha.
وَبِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ، وَاللَّفْظِ، وَبِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ، وَاللَّفْظِ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قِيلَ لَهُ: مَا الْغِيبَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: " ذِكْرُكَ أَخَاكَ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ"، قَالَ: أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا أَقُولُ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ:" إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِيكَ مَا تَقُولُ، فَقَدْ اغْتَبْتَهُ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ مَا تَقُولُ، فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ" .
