Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 9080
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: "A few of the former people and a few of the later people", it was very hard on the Muslims (that only a few people from the past generations would be destined for Paradise). Thereupon, this verse was revealed: "A group from the former people and a group from the later people". And the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "You will be one-third, rather half of the people of Paradise, and (the remaining) half will be from among your brethren".

حضرت ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ جب یہ آیت نازل ہوئی ثلۃ من الاولین و قلیل من الآخرین " تو مسلمانوں پر یہ بات بڑی شاق گذری (کہ پچھلے لوگوں میں سے صرف تھوڑے سے لوگ جنت کے لئے ہوں گے) اس پر یہ آیت نازل ہوئی کہ ایک گروہ پہلوں کا اور دوسرا گروہ پچھلوں کا ہوگا اور نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا تم لوگ تمام اہل جنت کا ثلث بلکہ نصف ہوگے اور نصف باقی میں وہ تمہارے شریک ہوں گے۔
Hazrat Abu Hurairah razi Allah anhu se marvi hai keh jab ye ayat nazil hui sulasa min al-awwalin wa qalil min al-akhirin to musalmanon per ye baat badi shaq guzri keh pechhle logon mein se sirf thore se log jannat ke liye honge is per ye ayat nazil hui keh ek giroh pehlon ka aur dusra giroh pechhlon ka hoga aur Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya tum log tamam ahl jannat ka suls balkay nisf honge aur nisf baqi mein wo tumhare sharik honge
حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ بَيَّاعِ الْمُلَاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَة ، قَالَ: لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ: ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الأَوَّلِينَ وَقَلِيلٌ مِنَ الآخِرِينَ سورة الواقعة آية 13 - 14، شَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَنَزَلَتْ: ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الأَوَّلِينَ وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الآخِرِينَ سورة الواقعة آية 39 - 40، فَقَالَ: " أَنْتُمْ ثُلُثُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ، بَلْ أَنْتُمْ نِصْفُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ، وَتُقَاسِمُونَهُمْ النِّصْفَ الْبَاقِي" .
