Chapter on expiation for vows

باب في كفارة النذر

Sunan al-Darimi 2371

Uqba bin Amir Al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: His sister vowed to go for Hajj on foot and with her head uncovered. I mentioned this to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: "Tell your sister to cover her head, ride, and fast three days." (Meaning, to offer expiation for not fulfilling her vow)


Grade: Da'if

سیدنا عقبہ بن عامر جہنی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: ان کی بہن نے نذر مانی کہ وہ حج کے لئے پیدل اور ننگے سر جائے گی، میں نے اس کا تذکرہ نبی کریم ﷺ سے کیا تو آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”اپنی بہن سے کہو سر ڈھانپ لے اور سوار ہو جائے اور تین دن کے روزے رکھے۔“ (یعنی نذر پوری نہ کرنے کا کفارہ دے)۔

Sayyidna Uqba bin Aamir Jahni (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne kaha: Un ki behan ne nazr mani ke woh Hajj ke liye paidal aur nange sar jayegi, maine iska tazkira Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se kiya to aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: ”Apni behan se kaho sar dhaanp le aur sawar ho jaye aur teen din ke roze rakhe.“ (yani nazr poori na karne ka kaffara de).

أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الرُّعَيْنِيّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ، قالَ: نَذَرَتْ أُخْتِي أَنْ تَحُجَّ لِلَّهِ مَاشِيَةً غَيْرَ مُخْتَمِرَةٍ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: "مُرْ أُخْتَكَ فَلْتَخْتَمِرْ، وَلْتَرْكَبْ، وَلْتَصُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ".

Sunan al-Darimi 2372

It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the sister of Sayyiduna 'Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) made a vow that she would walk to the Holy Ka'bah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Verily, Allah is not in need of your sister's vow. She should ride and offer a sacrificial animal as expiation."


Grade: Sahih

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ سیدنا عقبہ رضی اللہ عنہ کی بہن نے نذر مانی کہ بیت اللہ شریف پیدل چل کر جائے گی، رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”بیشک اللہ تعالیٰ غنی ہے تمہاری بہن کی نذر سے، اس کو چاہیے کہ سوار ہو جائے اور کفارے میں ایک ہدی ذبح کرے۔“

Sayyidina Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ke Sayyidina Uqba (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ki behan ne nazr mani ke Baitullah Sharif paidal chal kar jayegi, Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: ”Beshak Allah Taala ghani hai tumhari behan ki nazr se, isko chahiye ke sawar ho jaye aur kaffare mein ek hadi zabah kare."

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، أَخْبَرَنِي قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: أَنَّ أُخْتَ عُقْبَةَ نَذَرَتْ أَنْ تَمْشِيَ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ نَذْرِ أُخْتِكَ، لِتَرْكَبْ وَلْتُهْدِ هَدْيًا".

Sunan al-Darimi 2373

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (R.A.) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw an elderly Sahabi (companion) walking between his two sons. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "What is the matter with this elderly man?" (Why don't you help him ride?) His sons replied, "O Messenger of Allah! He has vowed to walk (for Hajj).” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "O elderly man! Ride, for Allah is غنی (Free of need/Rich) from you and your vow." (Meaning, Allah does not need it. In Sahih Bukhari it says: "Allah is not concerned with this person putting his life in hardship.").


Grade: Sahih

سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ رسول الله ﷺ نے ایک بوڑھے صحابی کو اپنے دو بیٹوں کے درمیان پیدل چلتا پایا تو پوچھا کہ ”ان بزرگ کو کیا ہوا؟“ (جوتمہارا سہارا لے کر چلتے ہیں) اس کے بیٹوں نے جواب دیا کہ یا رسول اللہ ﷺ ! انہوں نے (حج کے لئے) پیدل جانے کی نذر مانی ہے، آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”اے بزرگ! سوار ہوجاؤ کیونکہ اللہ تعالیٰ غنی ہے تم سے اور تمہاری نذر سے۔“ (یعنی اللہ تعالیٰ کو اس کی حاجت نہیں۔ بخاری شریف میں ہے: ”الله تعالیٰ اس سے بے پرواہ (غنی) ہے کہ یہ شخص اپنی جان کو عذاب میں ڈالے۔“)

Sayyidina Abu Hurairah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se marvi hai ki Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne ek boorhe sahabi ko apne do beton ke darmiyaan paidal chalta paya to poocha ki "in buzurg ko kya hua?" (jo tumhara sahara lekar chalte hain) uske beton ne jawab diya ki Ya Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)! Unhon ne (Hajj ke liye) paidal jane ki nazr mani hai, aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "aye buzurg! Sawar ho jao kyunki Allah Ta'ala gani hai tumse aur tumhari nazr se." (yani Allah Ta'ala ko iski hajat nahin. Bukhari Sharif mein hai: "Allah Ta'ala is se be parwah (ghani) hai ki yeh shakhs apni jaan ko azab mein dale.")

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، عَنْ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَدْرَكَ شَيْخًا يَمْشِي بَيْنَ ابْنَيْهِ، فَقَالَ:"مَا شَأْنُ هَذَا الشَّيْخِ؟"، فَقَالَ ابْنَاهُ: نَذَرَ أَنْ يَمْشِيَ، فَقَالَ: "ارْكَبْ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْكَ وَعَنْ نَذْرِكَ".
