Chapter on the number of Rak'ahs in Witr prayer

باب كم الوتر

Sunan al-Darimi 1620

It is narrated on the authority of Sayyidah Aisha Radi Allahu Anha that the night prayer of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was thirteen rak'ahs, in which he would pray five rak'ahs of Witr and would not sit except in the last rak'ah, where he would recite the tashahhud and then say the salam.

سیدہ عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے مروی ہے کہ رسول الله ﷺ کی رات کی نماز تیرہ رکعتیں تھیں جن میں پانچ رکعت وتر پڑھتے اور بیٹھتے نہیں، بس آخری رکعت میں تشہد کرتے اور سلام پھیر دیتے۔

Saeeda Ayesha Radi Allah Anha se marvi hai ke Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki raat ki namaz terah rakat thi jin mein panch rakat witr parhte aur baithte nahi, bas akhri rakat mein tashahhud karte aur salam pher dete.

أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهِ عَنْهَا، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ"كَانَتْ صَلَاتُهُ مِنْ اللَّيْلِ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً، يُوتِرُ مِنْهَا بِخَمْسٍ، لَا يَجْلِسُ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْ الْخَمْسِ حَتَّى يَجْلِسَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ، فَيُسَلِّمَ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1621

Our master Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: "Pray five rak'ahs of Witr. If you do not have the strength for that, then pray three. If you do not have the strength for that, then pray one. And if you do not have the strength for that, then pray it with a gesture."

سیدنا ابوایوب انصاری رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: رسول اللہ ﷺ نے مجھ سے کہا: ”پانچ رکعت وتر پڑھو، اگر اتنی طاقت نہ ہو تو تین رکعت پڑھ لو، اس کی بھی طاقت نہ ہو تو ایک رکعت ہی پڑھ لو، اس کی قوت نہ ہو تو اشارے سے پڑھ لو۔“

Sayyidina Abu Ayyub Ansari (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne kaha: Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne mujh se kaha: "Panch rakat witr parho, agar itni taqat na ho to teen rakat parh lo, is ki bhi taqat na ho to ek rakat hi parh lo, is ki quwwat na ho to ishaare se parh lo."

أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهِ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "أَوْتِرْ بِخَمْسٍ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ فَبِثَلَاثٍ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ، فَبِوَاحِدَةٍ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ فَأَوْمِئْ إِيمَاءً".

Sunan al-Darimi 1622

This narration from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, about the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him, is also like the previous one.


Grade: Sahih

اس سند سے بھی سیدنا ابوایوب رضی اللہ عنہ نے نبی کریم ﷺ سے مثل سابق روایت کی ہے۔

Iss سند se bhi Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Razi Allah Anhu ne Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se misl sabiq riwayat ki hai.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهِ عَنْهُ، عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، نَحْوَهُ.

Sunan al-Darimi 1623

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the night prayer, so he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "It is two rak'ahs, two rak'ahs, then when one fears the approach of dawn, he should pray one rak'ah, and that will make it odd." Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked: Do you also say this? He said: Yes. (Meaning it is permissible to pray one rak'ah of Witr).


Grade: Sahih

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا: ایک شخص نے رسول اللہ ﷺ سے رات کی نماز کے بارے میں پوچھا تو آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”وہ دو دو رکعت ہے، پھر جب کوئی صبح ہو جانے سے ڈرے تو ایک رکعت پڑھ لے، وہ اس کو طاق بنا دے گی۔“ امام دارمی رحمہ اللہ سے پوچھا گیا: کیا آپ بھی یہ کہتے ہیں؟ کہا: ہاں۔ (یعنی ایک رکعت وتر پڑھنا درست ہے)۔

Saina Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ne kaha: Ek shakhs ne Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se raat ki namaz ke bare mein poocha to aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Woh do do rakat hai, phir jab koi subah ho jaane se dare to ek rakat padh le, woh usko taaq bana degi." Imam Darami Rahmatullah Alaih se poocha gaya: Kya aap bhi ye kahte hain? Kaha: Haan. (yani ek rakat witr padhna durust hai).

أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ، فَقَالَ: "مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ الصُّبْحَ، فَلْيُصَلِّ رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً تُوتِرُ، مَا قَدْ صَلَّى". قِيلَ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ: تَأْخُذُ بِهِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ.

Sunan al-Darimi 1624

Sayyida Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would pray eleven rak'ahs between the Isha' and Fajr prayers, offering the Salam after every two rak'ahs, and he would pray one rak'ah Witr.


Grade: Sahih

سیدہ عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے فرمایا: رسول الله ﷺ عشاء اور فجر کے درمیان گیارہ رکعت نماز پڑھتے تھے، اور ہر دو رکعت پر سلام پھیرتے اور ایک رکعت وتر پڑھتے تھے۔

Sayyida Ayesha ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ا) ne farmaya: Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) Isha aur Fajr ke darmiyan gyarah rakat namaz parhte thay, aur har do rakat par salam pherte aur ek rakat witr parhte thay.

أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ "يُصَلِّي مَا بَيْنَ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى الْفَجْرِ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً، يُسَلِّمُ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، وَيُوتِرُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1625

Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite in the three rak'ahs of Witr: "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High" (Surah Al-A'la 87:1), "Say, 'O disbelievers'" (Surah Al-Kafirun 109:1) and "Say, 'He is Allah , [who is] One'" (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1).


Grade: Sahih

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا: نبی کریم ﷺ تین رکعت وتر میں «سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى»، «قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ» اور «قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ» پڑھتے تھے۔

Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ne kaha: Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) teen rakat witr mein «Subbihisma Rabbikal A'la», «Qul Ya Ayyuhal Kaferoon» aur «Qul Huwallahu Ahad» parhte thay.

أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ:"كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثٍ: بِ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ".
