Chapter on fasting while traveling

باب الصوم في السفر

Sunan al-Darimi 1745

It is narrated on the authority of Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyidah 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Hamza bin 'Amr Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! I intend to travel, what do you command me?" He said: "If you wish, fast, and if you wish, do not fast."

ام المومنین سیدہ عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے مروی ہے کہ سیدنا حمزہ بن عمرو اسلمی رضی اللہ عنہ نے رسول اللہ ﷺ سے کہا: اے اللہ کے رسول! میرا سفر کا ارادہ ہے، آپ مجھے کیا حکم دیتے ہیں؟ فرمایا: ”اگر چاہو تو روزہ رکھنا اور چاہو تو نہ رکھنا۔“

Am ul momineen Syeda Ayesha raziallahu anha se marvi hai ke Sydena Hamza bin Amr Aslami raziallahu anhu ne Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se kaha: Aye Allah ke Rasool! Mera safar ka irada hai, aap mujhe kya hukum dete hain? Farmaya: ”Agar chaho to roza rakhna aur chaho to na rakhna“.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ حَمْزَةَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو الْأَسْلَمِيَّ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ السَّفَرَ، فَمَا تَأْمُرُنِي؟ قَالَ: "إِنْ شِئْتَ، فَصُمْ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ، فَأَفْطِرْ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1746

Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left (Madinah) in the year Makkah was conquered, observing Saum (fasting), and the people fasted with him. When they reached a place called Kadid, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) broke his fast, so the people broke their fast too. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would immediately adopt his new practice.

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا: رسول اللہ ﷺ جس سال مکہ فتح ہوا (مدینہ سے) نکلے تو (سفر میں) روزہ رکھا اور سب لوگوں نے بھی روزہ رکھا، اور جب آپ کدید مقام پر پہنچے تو آپ ﷺ نے روزہ توڑ دیا اور سب لوگوں نے بھی روزہ توڑ دیا، آپ ﷺ کے صحابہ رضی اللہ عنہم اجمعین آپ کے نئے عمل کو فوراً اپنا لیتے تھے۔

Saina Ibne Abbas Raziallahu Anhuma ne kaha: Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) jis saal Makkah fatah hua (Madina se) nikle to (safar mein) roza rakha aur sab logon ne bhi roza rakha, aur jab aap Qadeed maqam par pahunche to aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne roza tod diya aur sab logon ne bhi roza tod diya, aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke sahaba Raziallahu Anhum ajmaeen aap ke naye amal ko foran apna lete the.

أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ:"خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ فَصَامَ وَصَامَ النَّاسُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ الْكَدِيد، ثُمَّ أَفْطَرَ، فَأَفْطَرَ النَّاسُ، فَكَانُوا يَأْخُذُونَ بِالْأَحْدَثِ فَالْأَحْدَثِ مِنْ فِعْلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1747

Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey (the Conquest of Makkah) when he saw a crowd of people and saw that they had shaded a man. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is the matter?" They said, "He is fasting." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is not righteous (good) to fast while traveling."

سیدنا جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہما نے ذکر کیا کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ ایک سفر (غزوہ فتح) میں تھے کہ آپ نے بھیڑ دیکھی اور دیکھا کہ لوگوں نے ایک شخص پر سایہ کر رکھا ہے، آپ ﷺ نے دریافت کیا: ”کیا بات ہے؟“ عرض کیا: ایک روزے دار ہے، نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”سفر میں روزہ رکھنا نیکی (اچھا کام) نہیں ہے۔“

Saina Jabir bin Abdullah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ne zikr kya keh Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ek safar (Ghazwa Fath) mein thay keh aap ne bheer dekhi aur dekha keh logon ne ek shakhs par saya kar rakha hai, aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne puchha: “Kya baat hai?” Arz kya: Ek rozaydaar hai, Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: “Safar mein roza rakhna neki (achcha kaam) nahin hai”.

أَخْبَرَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ، وَأَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَسَنِ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّهُ ذَكَرَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ فِي سَفَرٍ فَرَأَى زِحَامًا وَرَجُلٌ قَدْ ظُلِّلَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ:"مَا هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: هَذَا صَائِمٌ. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "لَيْسَ مِنْ الْبِرِّ الصَّوْمُ فِي السَّفَرِ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1748

Narrated by Sayyidina Ka'b bin 'Asim Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Fasting while traveling is not righteous."


Grade: Sahih

سیدنا کعب بن عاصم اشعری رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”سفر میں روزہ رکھنا نیکی نہیں ہے۔“

Sayyidna Ka'b bin Asim Ash'ari RA se marvi hai ki Rasul Allah SAW ne farmaya: "Safar mein roza rakhna neki nahi hai."

أَخْبَرَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدُ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ، عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: "لَيْسَ مِنْ الْبِرِّ الصِّيَامُ فِي السَّفَرِ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1749

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin 'Asim Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that it is not good to fast while traveling.


Grade: Sahih

سیدنا کعب بن عاصم اشعری رضی اللہ عنہ نے نبی کریم ﷺ سے روایت کیا کہ سفر میں روزہ رکھنا اچھا نہیں ہے۔

Sayyidna Kaab bin Asim Ashari (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se riwayat kiya keh safar mein roza rakhna acha nahin hai.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَفْوَانَ، عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ، عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ، عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: "لَيْسَ مِنْ الْبِرِّ الصِّيَامُ فِي السَّفَرِ".
