Sunan al-Darimi 188
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Amir Ash-Sha'bi (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about something, he would say, "La adri" (I don't know). If asked again, he would say with firmness: "I swear to Allah for your sake, if I had knowledge of it (meaning, by Allah, I have no knowledge of it)."

سیدنا مغیرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ سیدنا عامر الشعبی رضی اللہ عنہ سے جب کسی چیز کے بارے میں پوچھا جاتا تو وہ کہہ دیتے تھے «لا أدري» (میں نہیں جانتا ہوں)، اگر دوبارہ پوچھا جاتا تو سختی سے کہتے: میں تمہارے لئے اللہ کی قسم کھاتا ہوں اگر مجھے اس کا علم ہو (یعنی قسم اللہ کی مجھے اس کا علم نہیں)۔
Saina Mugheera RA se marvi hai ki Saina Aamir Al-Shaabi RA se jab kisi cheez ke baare mein poocha jata to woh keh dete the «La adri» agar dobara poocha jata to sakhti se kehte: mein tumhare liye Allah ki qasam khata hun agar mujhe iska ilm ho.
(حديث مقطوع) أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ، قَالَ: "كَانَ عَامِرٌ إِذَا سُئِلَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ، يَقُولُ: لَا أَدْرِي، فَإِنْ رُدُّوا عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: إِنْ شِئْتَ كُنْتُ حَلَفْتُ لَكَ بِاللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ لِي بِهِ عِلْمٌ".
