Chapter: The Sunnah judges according to the Book of Allah, the Most High
باب: السنة قاضية على كتاب الله تعالى
Sunan al-Darimi 608
It is narrated on the authority of Imam Auza'i (may Allah have mercy on him): Mak'hul (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Sunnah is of two types, one which is obligatory to adhere to and abandoning it is disbelief, and the other is a Sunnah whose practice is virtuous and there is no harm in leaving it.

امام اوزاعی رحمہ اللہ سے مروی ہے: مکحول رحمہ اللہ نے فرمایا: سنت دو قسم کی ہوتی ہے، ایک وہ جس کو پکڑنا (تھامنا) فرض اور چھوڑنا کفر ہے، دوسری وہ سنت کہ اس پر عمل کرنا (باعث) فضیلت اور ترک کرنے میں کوئی حرج نہ ہو۔
Imam Auzai rehmatullah alaih se marvi hai: Makhool rehmatullah alaih ne farmaya: Sunnat do qisam ki hoti hai, aik woh jis ko pakadna farz aur chhorna kufr hai, dusri woh sunnat keh is par amal karna fazilat aur tark karne mein koi harj na ho.
(حديث مقطوع) أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، قَالَ: "السُّنَّةُ سُنَّتَانِ: سُنَّةٌ الْأَخْذُ بِهَا فَرِيضَةٌ، وَتَرْكُهَا كُفْرٌ، وَسُنَّةٌ الْأَخْذُ بِهَا فَضِيلَةٌ، وَتَرْكُهَا إِلَى غَيْرِ حَرَجٍ".
