Chapter: People excel over one another in faith, and the superiority of the people of Yemen in faith

باب تَفَاضُلِ أَهْلِ الإِيمَانِ فِيهِ وَرُجْحَانِ أَهْلِ الْيَمَنِ فِيهِ
Sahih Muslim 51
It is narrated on the authority of Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) pointed towards Yemen with his hand and said : Verily Iman is towards this side, and harshness and callousness of the hearts is found among the rude owners of the camels who drive them behind their tails (to the direction) where emerge the two horns of Satan, they are the tribes of Rabi'a and Mudar.
حضرت ابو مسعود ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہاتھ یمن کی طرف کر کے اشارہ کیا اور فرمایا: ”خبردار ایمان ادھر ہے، درشتی و شدّت اور سنگ دلی ان لوگوں میں ہے جواونٹوں کی دم کی جڑ میں چیختے چلاتے ہیں، جہاں شیطان کے دو سینگ نکلتے ہیں ربیعہ و مضر میں۔“
Hazrat Abu Mas'ood (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Nabi Akram (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne hath Yemen ki taraf kar ke ishara kiya aur farmaya: "Khabardar iman idhar hai, durushti-o-shiddat aur sang-dili in logon mein hai jo oonton ki dum ki jarr mein cheekhte chillate hain, jahan shaitan ke do seeng nikalte hain Rabiyah-o-Mudar mein."
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) observed : There have come the people of Yemen; they are tender at hearts, the belief is that of the Yemenites, the understanding (of the faith) is that of the Yemenites and sagacity is that of the Yemenites.
حضرت ابو ہریرہ ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اہلِ یمن آئے ہیں یہ لوگ نرم دل ہیں ایمان یمنی ہے، فقہ یمنی ہے اور حکمت بھی یمانی ہے۔“
Hazrat Abu Huraira (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Ahl-e-Yemen aaye hain yeh log naram-dil hain iman yamni hai, fiqh yamni hai aur hikmat bhi yamani hai."
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ، أَنْبَأَنَا حَمَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " جَاءَ أَهْلُ الْيَمَنِ هُمْ أَرَقُّ أَفْئِدَةً الإِيمَانُ يَمَانٍ وَالْفِقْهُ يَمَانٍ وَالْحِكْمَةُ يَمَانِيَةٌ " .
Sahih Muslim 52b
Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported the same Hadith which is transmitted to us by another chain of transmitters, like Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, Ishaq bin Yusuf Azraq, Ibn 'Aun, etc.
امام صاحب مذکورہ بالا واقعہ اور حدیث دوسری سند سے بیان کرتے ہیں۔
Imam Sahib mazkoora bala waqeya aur hadith doosri sanad se bayan karte hain.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِي عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الأَزْرَقُ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِمِثْلِهِ .
Sahih Muslim 52c
Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported : The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) observed : There came to you the people from Yemen; they are tender at hearts and mild of feelings, the understanding is Yemenite, the sagacity is Yemenite.
حضرت ابو ہریرہ ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”تمھارے پاس یمنی لوگ آئےہیں دل کے ضعیف اور فواد کے نرم، فقہ یمنی ہے اور حکمت بھی یمانی ہے۔“
Hazrat Abu Huraira (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Tumhare pas yamni log aaye hain dil ke zaif aur fuad ke naram, fiqh yamni hai aur hikmat bhi yamani hai."
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) remarked : The summit of unbelief is towards the East and the pride and conceitedness is found among the owners of horses and camels who are rude and uncivil, people of the tents, and tranquillity is found among those who rear goats and sheep.
حضرت ابو ہریرہ ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”کفر کا گڑھ مشرق کی طرف ہے اور فخر و تکبر گھوڑوں اور اونٹوں والوں میں ہےجو چلاتے ہیں جو وبر والے (جنگلی) ہیں اور سکینت و اطمینان بکریوں کے مالکوں میں ہے۔“
Hazrat Abu Huraira (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Kufar ka garh mashriq ki taraf hai aur fakhar-o-takabbur ghoron aur oonton walon mein hai jo chillate hain jo wabar wale (jangli) hain aur sakeenat-o-itminan bakriyon ke malkon mein hai."
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) observed : The belief is among the Yemenites, and the unbelief is towards the East, and tranquillity is among those who rear goats and sheep, and pride and simulation is among the uncivil and rude owners of horses and camels.
حضرت ابو ہریرہ ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”ایمان یمن میں ہے، کفر مشرق کی طرف ہے، سکون و اطمینان اہلِ غنم (بکری) میں ہے۔ فخر و ریاء، شور کرنے والوں، اہلِ خیل (گھوڑے) اور اہلِ وبر میں ہے۔“ (اونٹوں والے)
Hazrat Abu Huraira (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Iman Yemen mein hai, kufar mashriq ki taraf hai, sukoon-o-itminan ahl-e-ghanam (bakri) mein hai. Fakhar-o-riya, shor karne walon, ahl-e-khail (ghore) aur ahl-e-wabar mein hai." (Oonton wale)
It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) : I heard the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) saying this: Pride and conceitedness is found among the uncivil owners of the camels and tranquillity is found among the owners of sheep and goats.
حضرت ابو ہریرہ ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا: ”فخر و تکبر سے چلّانے والوں، اونٹوں کے مالکوں میں سے ہے، اور اطمینان و سکون بکری والوں میں ہے۔“
Hazrat Abu Huraira (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke main ne Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ko farmate hue suna: "Fakhar-o-takabbur se chillane walon, oonton ke malkon mein se hai, aur itminan-o-sukoon bakri walon mein hai."
The same Hadith has been narrated by Zuhri with the same chain of authorities with the addition : The belief is among the Yemenites, the sagacity is that of the Yemenites.
زہریؒ یہی روایت اسی سند سے بیان کرتے ہیں اور آخر میں اضافہ ہے ”ایمان یمنی ہے اور حکمت بھی یمانی ہے۔“
Zuhri (Rahmatullahi Alaih) yehi riwayat isi sanad se bayan karte hain aur aakhir mein izafa hai "iman yamni hai aur hikmat bhi yamani hai."
Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said : I heard the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) saying: There came the people of Yemen, they are tender in feelings and meek at hearts. The belief is that of the Yemenites, the sagacity is that of the Yemenites, the tranquillity is among the owners of goats and sheep, and pride and conceitedness is among the uncivil owners of the camels, the people of the tents in the direction of sunrise.
حضرت ابو ہریرہ ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے سنا: ”اہلِ یمن آئے ہیں، ان کے دل (دوسروں سے) زیادہ نرم ہیں اور مزاجوں میں زیادہ نرمی ہے۔ ایمان یمنی ہے اور حکمت بھی یمانی ہے۔ سکینت اہلِ غنم میں ہے اور فخرو خیلاء چیخنے والے اہلِ وبر میں ہے جو سورج کے طلوع ہونے کی طرف رہتے ہیں۔“
Hazrat Abu Huraira (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke main ne Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ko farmate suna: "Ahl-e-Yemen aaye hain, in ke dil (doosron se) zyada naram hain aur mizajon mein zyada narmi hai. Iman yamni hai aur hikmat bhi yamani hai. Sakeenat ahl-e-ghanam mein hai aur fakhar-o-khuyila cheekhne wale ahl-e-wabar mein hai jo suraj ke tulu hone ki taraf rehte hain."
It is reporter on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) observed : There came the people of Yemen who are soft at hearts, tender in feelings; the belief is that of the Yemenites, the sagacity is that of the Yemenites and the summit of unbelief is towards the East.
حضرت ابو ہریرہ ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”تمھارے پاس اہلِ یمن آئے ہیں، ان کے قلوب نرم اور فواد رقیق (پتلے) ہیں۔ ایمان یمنی ہے اور حکمت بھی یمانی ہے، اور کفر کی چوٹی مشرق کی طرف ہے۔“
Hazrat Abu Huraira (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Tumhare pas ahl-e-Yemen aaye hain, in ke quloob naram aur fuad raqeeq (patle) hain. Iman yamni hai aur hikmat bhi yamani hai, aur kufar ki choti mashriq ki taraf hai."
Qutaiba bin Sa'id and Zubair bin Harb say : Jarir (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated this on the authority of A'mash (رضي الله تعالى عنه) with the same chain of narrators (as mentioned above).
امام صاحب مذکورہ بالا روایت ایک دوسری سند سے بیان کرتے ہیں اور اس میں ”کفرکا گڑھ مشرق کی طرف ہے۔“ کا تذکرہ نہیں کیا۔
Imam Sahib mazkoora bala riwayat ek doosri sanad se bayan karte hain aur is mein "kufar ka garh mashriq ki taraf hai." ka tazkira nahi kiya.
Shu'ba narrated the Hadith as reported by Jarir (رضي الله تعالى عنه) with the same chain of narrators with this addition : Pride and conceitedness is among the owners of the camels and tranquillity and sobriety is found among the owners of sheep.
امام صاحب یہی روایت ایک اور سند سے بیان کرتے ہیں اور اس میں اتنا اضافہ ہے کہ ”فخر وخیلاء اونٹ والوں اور سکینت ووقار بکریوں والوں میں ہے۔“
Imam Sahib yehi riwayat ek aur sanad se bayan karte hain aur is mein itna izafa hai ke "fakhar-o-khuyila oont walon aur sakeenat-o-waqar bakriyon walon mein hai."
It is reported on the authority of Jabir bin Abdullah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) observed : The callousness of heart and sternness is in the East and faith is among the people of the Hijaz.
حضرت جابر بن عبداللہ ؓ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”دلوں کی سختی اور شدت مشرق میں ہے اور ایمان اہلِ حجاز میں ہے۔“
Hazrat Jaber bin Abdullah (Radhi Allahu Anhu) bayan karte hain ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Dilon ki sakhti aur shiddat mashriq mein hai aur iman ahl-e-Hijaz mein hai."
