Chapter: The obligation to fast Ramadan when the crescent is sighted, and to break the fast when the crescent is sighted, and that if it is cloudy at the beginning or end of the month, then the month should be completed as thirty days.

Sahih Muslim 1080b
Ibn Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) made a mention of Ramadan and he with the gesture of his hand said, the month is thus and thus. (He then withdrew his thumb at the third time). He then said, fast when you see it, and break your fasting when you see it, and if the weather is cloudy calculate it as thirty days.
حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے رمضان کا ذکر کیا۔ پھر دونوں ہاتھوں کو کھول کر اشارہ کر کے بتایا اور فرمایا: ”مہینہ اس طرح ہے مہینہ ایسے ہے اور تیسری دفعہ انگوٹھا بند کر کے فرمایا: ایسے ہے۔ لہٰذا چاند دیکھ کر روزہ رکھو اور اسے دیکھ کر روزہ رکھو اگر چاند تم سے مخفی ہو جائے تو تیس کی گنتی پوری کر لو۔“
Hazrat Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhum) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne Ramadan ka zikr kiya. Phir donon hathon ko khol kar isharah kar ke bataya aur farmaya: "Mahina is tarah hai mahina aise hai aur teesri dafa angootha band kar ke farmaya: aise hai. Lehaza chand dekh kar roza rakho aur isay dekh kar roza rakho agar chand tum se makhfi ho jaye toh tees ki ginti poori kar lo."
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، رضى الله عنهما أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ذَكَرَ رَمَضَانَ فَضَرَبَ بِيَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ " الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا - ثُمَّ عَقَدَ إِبْهَامَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ - فَصُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ ثَلاَثِينَ " .
