Chapter: The obligation to fast Ramadan when the crescent is sighted, and to break the fast when the crescent is sighted, and that if it is cloudy at the beginning or end of the month, then the month should be completed as thirty days.

بَاب وُجُوبِ صَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ لِرُؤْيَةِ الْهِلَالِ وَالْفِطْرِ لِرُؤْيَةِ الْهِلَالِ وَأَنَّهُ إِذَا غُمَّ فِي أَوَّلِهِ أَوْ آخِرِهِ أُكْمِلَتْ عِدَّةُ الشَّهْرِ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْمًا
Sahih Muslim 1080d
Ubaidullah narrated with the same chain of transmitters that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) made a mention of Ramadan and said, the month may consist of twenty-nine days, and it may be thus, thus and thus, and (he further) said, calculate it, but he did not say thirty.
امام صاحب اپنے استاد عبیداللہ بن سعید سے عبیداللہ کی مذکورہ سند ہی سے بیان کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے رمضان کا تذکرہ کیا اور فرمایا: مہینہ انتیس کا ہوتا ہے مہینہ ایسا، ایسا، ایسا بھی ہوتا ہے اور فرمایا ”فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ“ گنتی پوری کرو اور ثلاثین کا لفظ نہیں کہا۔
Imam sahab apne ustad Ubaidullah bin Saeed se Ubaidullah ki mazkoorah sanad hi se bayan karte hain ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne Ramadan ka tazkirah kiya aur farmaya: mahina untees ka hota hai mahina aisa, aisa, aisa bhi hota hai aur farmaya "faqduroo lahu" ginti poori karo aur salaseen ka lafz nahi kaha.
وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ وَقَالَ ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ " الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا " . وَقَالَ " فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ " . وَلَمْ يَقُلْ " ثَلاَثِينَ " .
