Chapter: The obligation to fast Ramadan when the crescent is sighted, and to break the fast when the crescent is sighted, and that if it is cloudy at the beginning or end of the month, then the month should be completed as thirty days.

بَاب وُجُوبِ صَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ لِرُؤْيَةِ الْهِلَالِ وَالْفِطْرِ لِرُؤْيَةِ الْهِلَالِ وَأَنَّهُ إِذَا غُمَّ فِي أَوَّلِهِ أَوْ آخِرِهِ أُكْمِلَتْ عِدَّةُ الشَّهْرِ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْمًا

Sahih Muslim 1080e
Ibn Umar (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) reported Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying, the month of Ramadan may consist of twenty-nine days. So do not fast till you have sighted the new moon and do not break fasting, till you have sighted the new moon of Shawwal, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate.
حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”مہینہ انتیس (29) کا بھی ہوتا ہےاس لیے چاند دیکھے بغیر روزہ نہ رکھو اور نہ دیکھے بغیر افطار کرو اگر آسمان ابر آلود ہو تو گنتی (تیس) پوری کر لو۔“
Hazrat Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhum) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne farmaya: "Mahina untees (29) ka bhi hota hai is liye chand dekhe baghair roza na rakho aur na dekhe baghair iftar karo agar aasman abar-alood ho toh ginti (tees) poori kar lo."
وَحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، - رضى الله عنهما - قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِنَّمَا الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ فَلاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ " .
