Chapter: The obligation to fast Ramadan when the crescent is sighted, and to break the fast when the crescent is sighted, and that if it is cloudy at the beginning or end of the month, then the month should be completed as thirty days.

بَاب وُجُوبِ صَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ لِرُؤْيَةِ الْهِلَالِ وَالْفِطْرِ لِرُؤْيَةِ الْهِلَالِ وَأَنَّهُ إِذَا غُمَّ فِي أَوَّلِهِ أَوْ آخِرِهِ أُكْمِلَتْ عِدَّةُ الشَّهْرِ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْمًا

Sahih Muslim 1080m
Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying, the month of Ramadan may consist of twenty-nine days, and Shu'ba (one of the narrators) (gave a practical demonstration how the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) explained to them by unfolding his hands thrice and folding his thumb at the third turn. 'Uqba (one of the narrators in this chain of transmitters) said, I think that he said that the month consists of thirty days and unfolded his palm three times.
حضرت ا بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما بیان کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: مہینہ انتیس کا ہوتا ہے شعبہ نے تین بار ہاتھوں کی انگلیوں کو ملایا اور تیسری بار انگوٹھا الگ کر لیا، عقبہ کہتے ہیں میرا خیال ہے آپ نے فرمایا: ”مہینہ تیس کا بھی ہوتا ہے اور دونوں کو تین بار ملایا۔“
Hazrat Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhum) bayan karte hain ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne farmaya: mahina untees ka hota hai Shoaba ne teen baar hathon ki unglion ko milaya aur teesri baar angootha alag kar liya, Uqba kehte hain mera khayal hai Aap ne farmaya: "Mahina tees ka bhi hota hai aur donon ko teen baar milaya."
وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ حُرَيْثٍ - قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، - رضى الله عنهما - يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ " . وَطَبَّقَ شُعْبَةُ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مِرَارٍ وَكَسَرَ الإِبْهَامَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ . قَالَ عُقْبَةُ وَأَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ " الشَّهْرُ ثَلاَثُونَ " وَطَبَّقَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مِرَارٍ .
