Chapter: The vow of a disbeliever, and what he should do about it if he becomes a muslim

باب نَذْرِ الْكَافِرِ وَمَا يَفْعَلُ فِيهِ إِذَا أَسْلَمَ
Sahih Muslim 1656c
'Abdullah b. 'Umar reported that 'Umar b. Khattab asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as he was at ji'rana (a town near Mecca) on his way back from Ta'if:Messenger of Allah, I had taken a vow during the days of Ignorance that I would observe I'tikaf for one day in the Sacred Mosque. So what is your opinion? He said: Go and observe I'tikaf for a day. And Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) gave him a slave girl out of the one-fifth (of the spoils of war meant for the Holy Prophet). And when Allah's Messenger (inay peace be upon him) set the war prisoners free. 'Umar b. Khattab heard their voice as they were saying: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has set as free. He (Hadrat 'Umar) said: What is this? They said: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has set free the prisoners of war (which had fallen to the lot of people). Thereupon he (Hadrat 'Umar) said: Abdullah, go to that slave-girl and set her free.
حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالی عنہما بیان کرتے ہیں، حضرت عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے مقام جعرانہ پر سوال کیا، جب کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم طائف سے واپس آئے تھے، کہا، اے اللہ کے رسول! میں نے جاہلیت کے دور میں مسجد حرام میں ایک دن کا اعتکاف کرنے کی نذر مانی تھی، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا کیا خیال و رائے ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”جاؤ، ایک دن کا اعتکاف کرو۔“ ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے انہیں (عمر کو) خمس سے ایک لونڈی دی تھی، تو جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے لوگوں (بنو ہوازن) کے قیدیوں کو آزاد کر دیا، حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ نے ان کی آوازوں کو سنا، وہ کہہ رہے تھے، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں آزاد کر دیا ہے، تو حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ نے پوچھا، یہ کیا ماجرا ہے؟ تو لوگوں نے کہا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے لوگوں کے قیدیوں کو آزاد کر دیا ہے، تو حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ نے کہا، اے عبداللہ! اس لونڈی کے پاس جاؤ، اور اس کو آزاد کر دو۔
Hazrat Abdullah Bin Umar (Razi Allahu Ta'ala Anhuma) bayan karte hain, Hazrat Umar Bin Khattab (Razi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) ne Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) se Maqam e Ja'ranah par sawal kiya, jab ki Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) Taif se wapas aaye the, kaha, aye Allah ke Rasool! Maine jahiliyat ke dor mein Masjid ul Haram mein ek din ka itekaf karne ki nazr mani thi, to Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ka kya khayal o raye hai? Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: “Jao, ek din ka itekaf karo.” Ibn Umar (Razi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) bayan karte hain, Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne unhein (Umar ko) Khums se ek laundi di thi, to jab Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne logon (Banu Hawazin) ke qaidiyon ko azad kar diya, Hazrat Umar (Razi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) ne un ki awazon ko suna, woh keh rahe the, Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne hamein azad kar diya hai, to Hazrat Umar (Razi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) ne poocha, yeh kya majra hai? To logon ne kaha, Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne logon ke qaidiyon ko azad kar diya hai, to Hazrat Umar (Razi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) ne kaha, aye Abdullah! Is laundi ke paas jao, aur us ko azad kar do.
وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، أَنَّ أَيُّوبَ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ نَافِعًا حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَهُوَ بِالْجِعْرَانَةِ بَعْدَ أَنْ رَجَعَ مِنَ الطَّائِفِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ أَنْ أَعْتَكِفَ يَوْمًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ فَكَيْفَ تَرَى قَالَ " اذْهَبْ فَاعْتَكِفْ يَوْمًا " . قَالَ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَدْ أَعْطَاهُ جَارِيَةً مِنَ الْخُمْسِ فَلَمَّا أَعْتَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم سَبَايَا النَّاسِ سَمِعَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ أَصْوَاتَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ أَعْتَقَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم . فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا فَقَالُوا أَعْتَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم سَبَايَا النَّاسِ . فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ اذْهَبْ إِلَى تِلْكَ الْجَارِيَةِ فَخَلِّ سَبِيلَهَا .
