Chapter: As-Sahw (forgetfulness) in prayer and prostrating to compensate for it

باب السَّهْوِ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَالسُّجُودِ لَهُ
Sahih Muslim 572a
'Alqama narrated It on the authority of 'Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) who said:The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said the prayer; (the narrator added): He made some act of omission or commission when he pronounced salutation; it was said to him: Messenger of Allah, is there something new about the prayer? He (the Holy Prophet) said: What is it? They said: You said prayer in such and such away. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) turned his feet and faced the Qibla and performed two prostrations and then pronounced salutations, and then turned his face towards us and said: If there is anything new about prayer (new command from the Lord) I informed you of that. But I am a human being and I forget as you for. get, so when I forget, remind me, and when any one of you is in doubt about his prayer. he should aim at what Is correct. and complete his prayer in that respect and then make two prostrations.
حضرت عبداللہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں نماز پڑھائی، ابراہیم نے کہا اس میں آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے زیادتی یا کمی کی تو جب آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے سلام پھیرا تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے عرض کیا گیا: اے اللہ کے رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! کیا نماز میں کوئی نیا حکم آ گیا ہے؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پوچھا: ”وہ کیا ہے؟“ صحابہ نے کہا آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اتنی اتنی رکعتیں پڑھائی ہیں، آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اپنے دونوں پاؤں موڑے، قبلہ کی طرف رخ کیا اور دو سجدے کیے پھر سلام پھیرا، پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہماری طرف رخ کیا اور فرمایا: ”اگر نماز میں کوئی نیا حکم نازل ہوتا تو میں تمہیں بتا دیتا، لیکن میں بھی انسان ہوں، تمہاری طرح بھول جاتا ہوں،اس لیے جب میں بھول جاؤں تو مجھے یاد دلا دیا کرو۔ اور جب تم میں سے کسی کو اپنی نماز کے بارے میں شک پڑ جائے تو وہ درستگی یا صحیح بات کی طرف پہنچنے کی کوشش کرے اور اس کے مطابق نماز پوری کر لے، پھر دو سجدے کرلے۔“
Hazrat Abdullah (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) bayan karte hain ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne hamein namaz parhayi, Ibrahim ne kaha is mein Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne ziyadati ya kami ki to jab Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne salam phera to Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) se arz kiya gaya: Aye Allah ke Rasool (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)! kya namaz mein koi naya hukm aa gaya hai? Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne pucha: ‘Wo kya hai?’ Sahaba ne kaha Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne itni itni rakatein parhayi hain, Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne apne dono paon more, qibla ki taraf rukh kiya aur do sajde kiye phir salam phera, phir Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne hamari taraf rukh kiya aur farmaya: ‘Agar namaz mein koi naya hukm nazil hota to main tumhein bata deta, lekin main bhi insan hoon, tumhari tarah bhool jata hoon, is liye jab main bhool jaon to mujhe yaad dila diya karo. Aur jab tum mein se kisi ko apni namaz ke baare mein shak par jaye to wo durusti ya sahih baat ki taraf pahunchne ki koshish kare aur is ke mutabiq namaz poori kar le, phir do sajde karle.’
وَحَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ابْنَا أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ جَمِيعًا عَنْ جَرِيرٍ، - قَالَ عُثْمَانُ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، - عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم - قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ زَادَ أَوْ نَقَصَ - فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قِيلَ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَحَدَثَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ شَىْءٌ قَالَ " وَمَا ذَاكَ " . قَالُوا صَلَّيْتَ كَذَا وَكَذَا - قَالَ - فَثَنَى رِجْلَيْهِ وَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ " إِنَّهُ لَوْ حَدَثَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ شَىْءٌ أَنْبَأْتُكُمْ بِهِ وَلَكِنْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ أَنْسَى كَمَا تَنْسَوْنَ فَإِذَا نَسِيتُ فَذَكِّرُونِي وَإِذَا شَكَّ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي صَلاَتِهِ فَلْيَتَحَرَّ الصَّوَابَ فَلْيُتِمَّ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ لْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ " .
