Chapter: As-Sahw (forgetfulness) in prayer and prostrating to compensate for it

باب السَّهْوِ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَالسُّجُودِ لَهُ
Sahih Muslim 572j
Ibrahim b. Suwaid-reported:'Alqama led us in the noon prayer and be offered five rak'ahs; when the prayer was complete, the people said to him: Abu Shibl, you have offered five rak'ahs. He said: No, I have not done that. They said: Yes (you said five rak'ahs). He (the narrator) said: And I was sitting in a corner among people and I was just a boy. I (also) said: Yes, you have offered five (rak'ahs). He said to me: O, one-eyed, do you say the same thing? I said: Yes. Upon this he turned (his face) and performed two prostrations and then gave salutations, and then reported 'Abdullah as saying: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in prayer and offered five rak'ahs. And as he turned away the people began to whisper amongst themselves. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What is the matter with you? They said: Has the prayer been extended? He said: No. They said: You have in fact said five rak'ahs. He (the Holy Prophet) then turned his back (and faced the Qibla) and performed two prostrations and then gave salutations and further said: Verily I am a human being like you, I forget just as you forget. Ibn Numair made this addition:" When any one of you forgets, he must perform two prostrations."
ابراہیم بن سوید رحمتہ اللہ علیہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ علقمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے ہمیں ظہر کی نماز پانچ رکعت پڑھا دیں تو جب اس نے سلام پھیرا لوگوں نے کہا اے ابو شبل آپ نے تو پانچ رکعات پڑھا دی ہیں۔ اس نے کہا ہرگز میں نے یہ کام نہیں کیا لوگوں نے کہا کیوں نہیں اور میں لوگوں کے ایک طرف تھا اور میں نوجوان تھا تو میں نے کہا کیوں نہیں! آپ نے واقعی پانچ رکعات پڑھائی ہیں اس نے مجھے کہا اے اعور تو بھی یہی کہتا ہے تو میں نے کہا، ہاں ابراہیم نے کہا تو وہ پھر گئے اور دو سجدے کیے پھر سلام پھیرا اور پھر کہا: عبداللہ نے کہا: ہمیں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پانچ رکعات پڑھا دیں تو جب آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پھرے لوگوں میں تشویش پیدا ہوئی تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پوچھا: ”تمہیں کیا ہے۔“ لوگوں نے کہا: اے اللہ کے رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! کیا نماز میں اضافہ ہو گیا ہے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا نہیں۔ لوگوں نے کہا تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پانچ رکعات پڑھا دی ہیں تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پھرے اور دو سجدے کیے پھر سلام پھیرا اور پھر فرمایا: ”نہیں، بس تمھاری طرح بشر ہوں میں بھی بھول جاتا ہوں جیسے تم بھول جاتے ہو۔“ اور ابن نمیر نے اپنی حدیث میں یہ اضافہ کیا، ”تو جب تم میں سے کوئی بھول جائے تو وہ دو سجدے کر لے۔“
Ibrahim bin Suwaid (Rahmatullah Alayhi) bayan karte hain ke Alqama (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) ne hamein zuhr ki namaz panch rakat parha dein to jab us ne salam phera logon ne kaha aye Abu Shibl aap ne to panch rak'aat parha di hain. Us ne kaha hargiz main ne yeh kaam nahi kiya logon ne kaha kyun nahi aur main logon ke ek taraf tha aur main naujawan tha to main ne kaha kyun nahi! aap ne waqayi panch rak'aat parhayi hain us ne mujhe kaha aye A'war tu bhi yahi kehta hai to main ne kaha, haan Ibrahim ne kaha to wo phir gaye aur do sajde kiye phir salam phera aur phir kaha: Abdullah ne kaha: hamein Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne panch rak'aat parha dein to jab Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) phire logon mein tashweesh paida hui to Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne pucha: ‘tumhein kya hai.’ Logon ne kaha: Aye Allah ke Rasool (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)! kya namaz mein izafa ho gaya hai Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne farmaya nahi. Logon ne kaha to Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne panch rak'aat parha di hain to Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) phire aur do sajde kiye phir salam phera aur phir farmaya: ‘nahi, bas tumhari tarah bashar hoon main bhi bhool jata hoon jise tum bhool jaate ho.’ Aur Ibn Numair ne apni hadees mein yeh izafa kiya, ‘to jab tum mein se koi bhool jaye to wo do sajde kar le.’
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ - حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ، قَالَ صَلَّى بِنَا عَلْقَمَةُ الظُّهْرَ خَمْسًا فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قَالَ الْقَوْمُ يَا أَبَا شِبْلٍ قَدْ صَلَّيْتَ خَمْسًا . قَالَ كَلاَّ مَا فَعَلْتُ . قَالُوا بَلَى - قَالَ - وَكُنْتُ فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْقَوْمِ وَأَنَا غُلاَمٌ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى قَدْ صَلَّيْتَ خَمْسًا . قَالَ لِي وَأَنْتَ أَيْضًا يَا أَعْوَرُ تَقُولُ ذَاكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ . قَالَ فَانْفَتَلَ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَمْسًا فَلَمَّا انْفَتَلَ تَوَشْوَشَ الْقَوْمُ بَيْنَهُمْ فَقَالَ " مَا شَأْنُكُمْ " . قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلْ زِيدَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ قَالَ " لاَ " . قَالُوا فَإِنَّكَ قَدْ صَلَّيْتَ خَمْسًا . فَانْفَتَلَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ " إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ أَنْسَى كَمَا تَنْسَوْنَ " . وَزَادَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ " فَإِذَا نَسِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ " .
