Chapter: Who should stand immediately behind Imam and who should stand behind them

باب مَنْ يَلِي الإِمَامَ ثُمَّ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ

Sunan an-Nasa'i 807

It was narrated that Abu Mas'ud (رضي الله تعالى عنه) Al-Ansiri said : "The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to gently pat our shoulders (to make sure the row was straight) at the time of prayer, and he-would say : 'Keep (the rows) straight; do not differ from one another lest your hearts would be afflicted with discord. Let those who are mature and wise stand closest to me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them."' Abu Mas'ud said : Today, there is much disharmony among you. Imam Abu 'Abdur Rahman (An-Nasai) said : (One of the narrators) Abu Ma'mar's name is Abdullah bin Sakhbarah.

ابومسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نماز میں  ( صف بندی کے وقت )  ہمارے کندھوں پر ہاتھ پھیرتے، اور فرماتے:  تم آگے پیچھے نہ کھڑے ہو کہ تمہارے دلوں میں پھوٹ پڑ جائے، اور تم میں سے ہوش مند اور باشعور لوگ مجھ سے قریب رہیں، پھر وہ جو ان سے قریب ہوں، پھر وہ جو  ( اس وصف میں )  ان سے قریب ہو ، ابومسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: اسی بنا پر تم میں آج اختلافات زیادہ ہیں۔ ابوعبدالرحمٰن  ( نسائی )  کہتے ہیں: ابومعمر کا نام عبداللہ بن سخبرہ ہے۔

Abu Mas'ud (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke Rasoolallah salal laahu alaihi wa sallam namaz mein ( saf bandi ke waqt) hamare kandhon per hath phirte, aur farmate: tum aage peeche na kharhey ho ke tumhare dilon mein phoot pad jae, aur tum mein se hoshmand aur bashe'ur log mujh se qareeb rahein, phir wo jo in se qareeb hon, phir wo jo ( is wasf mein) in se qareeb ho, Abu Mas'ud (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain: isi bana per tum mein aaj ikhtilafat ziada hain. Abu Abdurrahman (Nasa'i) kehte hain: Abu Mu'mar ka naam Abdullah bin Sakhbarah hai.

أَخْبَرَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَيَقُولُ ‏"‏ لاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ لِيَلِيَنِّي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الأَحْلاَمِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ فَأَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ أَشَدُّ اخْتِلاَفًا ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَخْبَرَةَ ‏.‏

Sunan an-Nasa'i 808

It was narrated that Qais bin 'Ubad said : "While I was in the Masjid in the first row, a man pulled me from behind and moved me aside, and took my place. By Allah, I could not focus on my prayer, then when he left I saw that it was Ubayy bin Ka'b ( رضي الله تعالى عنه). He said : 'O boy, may Allah protect you from harm. This is what the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) instructed us to do, to stand directly behind him.' Then he (Ubayy - رضي الله تعالى عنه) turned to face the Qiblah and said : 'Doomed are Ah1 Al-'Uqd, by the Lord of the Ka'ba! - three times.'Then he said : 'By Allah, I am not sad for them, but I am sad for the people whom they have misled.' I said : 'O Abu Ya'qub (رضي الله تعالى عنه), what do you mean by Ah1 Al-'Uqd?' He said : 'The rulers."'

قیس بن عباد کہتے ہیں کہ میں مسجد میں اگلی صف میں تھا کہ اسی دوران مجھے میرے پیچھے سے ایک شخص نے زور سے کھینچا، اور مجھے ہٹا کر میری جگہ خود کھڑا ہو گیا، تو قسم اللہ کی غصہ کے مارے مجھے اپنی نماز کا ہوش نہیں رہا، جب وہ  ( سلام پھیر کر )  پلٹا تو کیا دیکھتا ہوں کہ وہ ابی بن کعب رضی اللہ عنہ ہیں تو انہوں نے مجھے مخاطب کر کے کہا: اے نوجوان! اللہ تجھے رنج و مصیبت سے بچائے! حقیقت میں نبی اکرم ﷺ سے ہمارا میثاق  ( عہد )  ہے کہ ہم ان سے قریب رہیں، پھر وہ قبلہ رخ ہوئے، اور انہوں نے تین بار کہا: رب کعبہ کی قسم! تباہ ہو گئے اہل عقد، پھر انہوں نے کہا: لیکن ہمیں ان پر غم نہیں ہے، بلکہ غم ان پر ہے جو بھٹک گئے ہیں، میں نے پوچھا: اے ابو یعقوب! اہل عقد سے آپ کا کیا مطلب؟ تو انہوں نے کہا: امراء  ( حکام )  مراد ہیں۔

Qais bin Abad kehte hain ke main masjid mein agali saf mein tha ke usi doran mujhe mere pichhe se ek shakhs ne zor se kheencha, aur mujhe hata kar meri jagah khud khara ho gaya, to qasam Allah ki ghusse ke mare mujhe apni namaz ka hosh nahin raha, jab woh ( salam phir kar ) pulta to kya dekhta hoon ke woh Abi bin Ka'ab (رضي الله تعالى عنه) hain to unhon ne mujhe mukhatib kar ke kaha: Aey naujawan! Allah tujhe ranj o musibat se bachaye! Haqiqat mein Nabi-e-Akram (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se hamara mithaq ( ahd ) hai ke hum un se qareeb rahein, phir woh qibla rukh hue, aur unhon ne teen bar kaha: Rab-e-Ka'ba ki qasam! Tabaah ho gaye ahl-e-aqd, phir unhon ne kaha: Lekin hamein un per gham nahin hai, balke gham un per hai jo bhatak gaye hain, maine poochha: Aey Abu Ya'qub! Ahl-e-aqd se aap ka kya matlab? To unhon ne kaha: Amra ( hukam ) murad hain.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُقَدَّمٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي التَّيْمِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي مِجْلَزٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ، قَالَ بَيْنَا أَنَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فِي الصَّفِّ الْمُقَدَّمِ فَجَبَذَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَلْفِي جَبْذَةً فَنَحَّانِي وَقَامَ مَقَامِي فَوَاللَّهِ مَا عَقَلْتُ صَلاَتِي فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ فَإِذَا هُوَ أُبَىُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ يَا فَتَى لاَ يَسُؤْكَ اللَّهُ إِنَّ هَذَا عَهْدٌ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِلَيْنَا أَنْ نَلِيَهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَقَالَ هَلَكَ أَهْلُ الْعُقَدِ وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ وَاللَّهِ مَا عَلَيْهِمْ آسَى وَلَكِنْ آسَى عَلَى مَنْ أَضَلُّوا ‏.‏ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا يَعْقُوبَ مَا يَعْنِي بِأَهْلِ الْعُقَدِ قَالَ الأُمَرَاءُ ‏.‏
