Regarding an adulterer; how many times is he asked to confess, and what is done after his confession?

Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 28772
Hazrat Buraidah narrated that Hazrat Ma'iz bin Malik Aslami came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and submitted: 'I have indeed wronged myself and I have committed fornication, and I want you to purify me.' So, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned him away. When the next day came, he again came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and submitted: 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I have indeed committed fornication.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned him away for the second time as well. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent for his people and asked: 'Do you find any defect in his mind? Do you observe anything wrong with him?' They replied: 'We do not know of anything except that his intellect is like that of our righteous people, as it appears to us.' The narrator says: So, when he came to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for the third time, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) again sent for his people and inquired about him. They replied that there was nothing wrong with him or his intellect. So, when he came for the fourth time, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered a pit to be dug for him, and then he was stoned to death at the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
حضرت بریدہ فرماتے ہیں کہ حضرت ماعز بن مالک اسلمی رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی خدمت میں آئے اور عرض کی : بیشک میں نے اپنی جان پر ظلم کیا ہے اور میں نے زنا کیا ہے، اور میں چاہتا ہوں کہ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) مجھے پاک کردیں، سو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ان کو واپس کردیا جب اگلا دن آیا تو وہ پھر آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے پاس آگئے اور عرض کی : یا سول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) ! بیشک میں نے زنا کیا ہے آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ان کو دوسری مرتبہ بھی واپس لوٹا دیا اور رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ان کی قوم کی طرف قاصد بھیجا اور فرمایا : کیا تم اس کی عقل میں کوئی حرج سمجھتے ہو ؟ کیا تم اس میں کوئی غلط چیز دیکھتے ہو ؟ انھوں نے کہا : ہم اس کے بارے میں نہیں جانتے مگر یہ کہ اس کی عقل ہمارے نیک لوگوں کی طرح ہے جیسا کہ ہمیں دکھائی دیا۔ راوی کہتے ہیں : پس وہ تیسری بار نبی کریم (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے پاس آئے تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ان کی قوم کی طرف پھر قاصد بھیجا اور اس کے بارے میں سوال کیا ؟ ان لوگوں نے بتلایا کہ اس میں اور اس کی عقل میں کوئی حرج والی بات نہیں، پس جب وہ چوتھی مرتبہ آیا تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے اس کے لیے ایک گڑھا کھودا اور پھر آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے حکم سے انھیں سنگسار کردیا گیا۔
Hazrat Buraidah farmate hain ke Hazrat Maaz bin Malik Aslami Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ki khidmat mein aye aur arz ki : beshak maine apni jaan par zulm kiya hai aur maine zina kiya hai, aur mein chahta hun ke aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) mujhe pak kar den, so aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne un ko wapas kar diya jab agla din aya to woh phir aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke pass aye aur arz ki : Ya Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ! beshak maine zina kiya hai aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne un ko dusri martaba bhi wapas luta diya aur Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne un ki qaum ki taraf qasid bheja aur farmaya : kya tum is ki aql mein koi harj samajhte ho ? kya tum is mein koi ghalat cheez dekhte ho ? unhon ne kaha : hum is ke bare mein nahin jante magar yeh ke is ki aql hamare nek logon ki tarah hai jaisa ke humein dikhayi diya. Ravi kehte hain : pas woh teesri baar Nabi Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke pass aye to aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne un ki qaum ki taraf phir qasid bheja aur is ke bare mein sawal kiya ? un logon ne batlaya ke is mein aur is ki aql mein koi harj wali baat nahin, pas jab woh chauthi martaba aya to aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne is ke liye ek garha khodha aur phir aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke hukm se unhen sangsar kar diya gaya.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا بَشِيرُ بْنُ مُهَاجِرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ : أَنَّ مَاعِزَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ الْأَسْلَمِيَّ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ، قَالَ : إِنِّي قَدْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي وَزَنَيْتُ ، وَإِنَّمَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ تُطَهِّرَنِي ، فَرَدَّهُ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْغَدَاةُ أَتَاهُ أَيْضًا ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي قَدْ زَنَيْتُ فَرَدَّهُ الثَّانِيَةَ ، فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ ، فَقَالَ : « أَتَعْلَمُونَ بِعَقْلِهِ بَأْسًا ؟ تُنْكِرُونَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا ؟»، فَقَالُوا : لَا نَعْلَمُهُ إِلَّا وَفِي الْعَقْلِ مِنْ صَالِحِينَا فِيمَا نَرَى ، قَالَ : فَأَتَاهُ الثَّالِثَةَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَيْضًا فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ أَنَّهُ ⦗ص:٥٣٩⦘ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَلَا بِعَقْلِهِ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ الرَّابِعَةُ حَفَرَ لَهُ حُفْرَةً ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ
