Chapter: Fleeing On The Day Of The March

باب فِي التَّوَلِّي يَوْمَ الزَّحْفِ

Sunan Abi Dawud 2646

Ibn Abbas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that when the verse - [O Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), motivate the believers for battle. If there are among you twenty steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand.] (Al-Anfaal - 65) was revealed. It was heavy and troublesome for Muslims when Allah prescribed for them that one (fighting Muslim) should not fly from ten (fighting non-Muslims). Then a light commandment was revealed saying - [For the present Allah hath lightened your (task)] (Al-Anfaal – 66). The narrator Abu Tawbah recited the verses [O Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), motivate the believers for battle. If there are among you twenty steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand. For the present, Allah has lightened your (task), for He knows that there is a weak spot in you: But (even so), if there are a hundred of you, patient and persevering, they will vanquish two hundred, and if a thousand, they will vanquish two thousand, with the leave of Allah. Allah is with those who patiently persevere.] (Al-Anfaal: 65-66). When Allah lightened the number, patience and perseverance also decreased according to the number lightened from them.’

عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ آیت کریمہ «إن يكن منكم عشرون صابرون يغلبوا مائتين» اگر تم میں سے بیس بھی صبر کرنے والے ہوں گے تو دو سو پر غالب رہیں گے ( سورۃ الانفال: ۶۵ ) نازل ہوئی تو اللہ تعالیٰ نے مسلمانوں پر یہ فرض کر دیا کہ ان میں کا ایک آدمی دس کافروں کے مقابلہ میں نہ بھاگے، تو یہ چیز ان پر شاق گزری، پھر تخفیف ہوئی اور اللہ نے فرمایا: «الآن خفف الله عنكم» اب اللہ نے تمہارا بوجھ ہلکا کر دیا ہے وہ خوب جانتا ہے کہ تم میں کمزوری ہے تو اگر تم میں سے ایک سو صبر کرنے والے ہوں گے تو وہ دو سو پر غالب رہیں گے ( سورۃ الانفال: ۶۶ ) ۔ ابوتوبہ نے پوری آیت «يغلبوا مائتين» تک پڑھ کر سنایا اور کہا: جب اللہ نے ان سے تعداد میں تخفیف کر دی تو اس تخفیف کی مقدار میں صبر میں بھی کمی کر دی۔

Abdul-allah bin Abbas radi-allahu anhuma kehte hain ke aayat-e-kareema «In yakan min-kum ishrun sabirun yagliboo ma'tain» agar tum mein se bis bhi sabar karne wale honge to do soo par ghalib rahenge ( Surah-al-Anfal: 65 ) nazil hui to Allah Ta'ala ne musalmanon par yeh farz kar diya ke in mein ka ek aadmi das kaffron ke muqable mein na bhaage, to yeh cheez in par shaq guzri, phir takhfif hui aur Allah ne farmaya: «al-an khaffaf Allah un-kum» ab Allah ne tumhara bojh halka kar diya hai woh khoob jaanta hai ke tum mein kamzori hai to agar tum mein se ek so sabar karne wale honge to woh do soo par ghalib rahenge ( Surah-al-Anfal: 66 ) . Abu-tubah ne puri aayat «Yagliboo ma'tain» tak padh kar sunaya aur kaha: jab Allah ne in se tadad mein takhfif kar di to is takhfif ki miqdar mein sabar mein bhi kami kar di.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو تَوْبَةَ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ حَازِمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ خِرِّيتٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَزَلَتْ إِنْ يَكُنْ مِنْكُمْ عِشْرُونَ صَابِرُونَ يَغْلِبُوا مِائَتَيْنِ سورة الأنفال آية 65، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَشَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ حِينَ فَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنْ لَا يَفِرَّ وَاحِدٌ مِنْ عَشَرَةٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ جَاءَ تَخْفِيفٌ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ الآنَ خَفَّفَ اللَّهُ عَنْكُمْ سورة الأنفال آية 66، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَرَأَ أَبُو تَوْبَةَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ يَغْلِبُوا مِائَتَيْنِ سورة الأنفال آية 66، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَلَمَّا خَفَّفَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمْ مِنَ الْعِدَّةِ نَقَصَ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ بِقَدْرِ مَا خَفَّفَ عَنْهُمْ.

Sunan Abi Dawud 2647

Abdullah ibn Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that he was sent with a detachment of the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم). The people wheeled round in flight. He said, I was one of those who wheeled round in flight. When we stopped, we said, how should we do? We have run away from the battlefield and deserve Allah's wrath. Then we said, let us enter Madina, stay there, and go there while no one sees us. So we entered Madina and thought, if we present ourselves before the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), and if there is a chance of repentance for us, we shall stay; if there is something else, we shall go away. So, we sat down (waiting) for the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) before the dawn prayer. When he came out, we stood up to him and said, we are the ones who have fled. He turned to us and said, no, you are the ones who return to fight after wheeling away. We then approached and kissed his hand, and he said, I am the main body of the Muslims.

عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کا بیان ہے کہ وہ رسول اللہ ﷺ کے سرایا میں سے کسی سریہ میں تھے، وہ کہتے ہیں کہ لوگ تیزی کے ساتھ بھاگے، بھاگنے والوں میں میں بھی تھا، جب ہم رکے تو ہم نے آپس میں مشورہ کیا کہ اب کیا کریں؟ ہم کافروں کے مقابلہ سے بھاگ کھڑے ہوئے اور اللہ کے غضب کے مستحق قرار پائے، پھر ہم نے کہا: چلو ہم مدینہ چلیں اور وہاں ٹھہرے رہیں، ( پھر جب دوسری بار جہاد ہو ) تو چل نکلیں اور ہم کو کوئی دیکھنے نہ پائے، خیر ہم مدینہ گئے، وہاں ہم نے اپنے دل میں کہا: کاش! ہم اپنے آپ کو رسول اللہ ﷺ کے سامنے پیش کرتے تو زیادہ بہتر ہوتا، اگر ہماری توبہ قبول ہوئی تو ہم ٹھہرے رہیں گے ورنہ ہم چلے جائیں گے، ہم رسول اللہ ﷺ کے انتظار میں فجر سے پہلے بیٹھ گئے، جب آپ ﷺ نکلے تو ہم کھڑے ہوئے اور آپ کے پاس جا کر ہم نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! ہم بھاگے ہوئے لوگ ہیں، آپ ہماری طرف متوجہ ہوئے اور فرمایا: نہیں، بلکہ تم لوگ «عکارون» ہو ( یعنی دوبارہ لڑائی میں واپس لوٹنے والے ہو ) ۔ عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں: ( خوش ہو کر ) ہم آپ کے نزدیک گئے اور آپ کا ہاتھ چوما تو آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: میں مسلمانوں کی پناہ گاہ ہوں ، ( یعنی ان کا ملجا و ماویٰ ہوں میرے سوا وہ اور کہاں جائیں گے؟ ) ۔

Abdul-Allah bin Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ka bayan hai ke woh Rasool-Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke saraya mein se kisi seriya mein the, woh kehte hain ke log tezi ke sath bhaage, bhaagne walon mein main bhi tha, jab hum ruke to hum ne aapas mein mashwara kiya ke ab kya karen? hum kaffron ke muqabala se bhag khade hue aur Allah ke ghazb ke mustahak qarar paye, phir hum ne kaha: chalo hum Madina chalein aur wahan thahre rahein, ( phir jab doosri bar jihad ho ) to chal niklein aur hum ko koi dekhne na paye, khair hum Madina gaye, wahan hum ne apne dil mein kaha: kash! hum apne aap ko Rasool-Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke samne pesh karte to ziada behtar hota, agar hamari toba qabool hui to hum thahre rahein ge warna hum chale jayenge, hum Rasool-Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke intezar mein fajr se pehle baith gaye, jab aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) nikle to hum khade hue aur aap ke pas ja kar hum ne arz kiya: Allah ke Rasool! hum bhaage hue log hain, aap hamari taraf mutawijah hue aur farmaaya: nahin, balke tum log «Ukaaron» ho ( yani dobara larai mein wapas lautne wale ho ) . Abdul-Allah bin Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a kehte hain: ( khush ho kar ) hum aap ke nazdik gaye aur aap ka hath chuma to aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaaya: main musalmanon ki panah gah hoon, ( yani un ka malja wa mawi hoon mere swa woh aur kahan jayenge? ) .

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ مِنْ سَرَايَا رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَحَاصَ النَّاسُ حَيْصَةً فَكُنْتُ فِيمَنْ حَاصَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَلَمَّا بَرَزْنَا قُلْنَا كَيْفَ نَصْنَعُ وَقَدْ فَرَرْنَا مِنَ الزَّحْفِ وَبُؤْنَا بِالْغَضَبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْنَا:‏‏‏‏ نَدْخُلُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَنَتَثَبَّتُ فِيهَا وَنَذْهَبُ وَلَا يَرَانَا أَحَدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَدَخَلْنَا فَقُلْنَا لَوْ عَرَضْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَإِنْ كَانَتْ لَنَا تَوْبَةٌ أَقَمْنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنْ كَانَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ ذَهَبْنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَجَلَسْنَا لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ قُمْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْنَا:‏‏‏‏ نَحْنُ الْفَرَّارُونَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَقْبَلَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا بَلْ أَنْتُمُ الْعَكَّارُونَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَدَنَوْنَا فَقَبَّلْنَا يَدَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّا فِئَةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ .

Sunan Abi Dawud 2648

Abu Sa’id (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that the verse – [If any do turn his back to them on such a day] (Al-Anfaal – 16), was revealed on the day of the Battle of Badr.

ابوسعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ «ومن يولهم يومئذ دبره» ۱؎ بدر کے دن نازل ہوئی۔

Abu Saeed Khudri (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke «Wa man yuwallam yawm-idz dabraha» 1٪ Badar ke din nazil hui.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَزَلَتْ فِي يَوْمِ بَدْرٍ وَمَنْ يُوَلِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ دُبُرَهُ سورة الأنفال آية 16.
