Chapter: The Minimum Recitation That Suffices An Illiterate Person Or A Non 'Arab

باب مَا يُجْزِئُ الأُمِّيَّ وَالأَعْجَمِيَّ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ

Sunan Abi Dawud 830

Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) came to them while they were reciting the Qur'an, and there were among us bedouins and the non-Arabs. He said : Recite, (currently) all is well. In the near future there will appear people who will straighten it (the Qur'an) as an arrow is straightened. They will recite it quickly and not slowly.

جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ  رسول اللہ  ﷺ  ہمارے پاس تشریف لائے اور ہم لوگ قرآن پڑھ رہے تھے اور ہم میں بدوی بھی تھے اور عجمی بھی، آپ  ﷺ  نے فرمایا:  پڑھو سب ٹھیک ہے عنقریب کچھ ایسے لوگ آئیں گے جو اسے ( یعنی قرآن کے الفاظ و کلمات کو )  اسی طرح درست کریں گے جیسے تیر درست کیا جاتا ہے  ( یعنی تجوید و قرآت میں مبالغہ کریں گے )  اور اسے ٹھہر ٹھہر کر پڑھنے کے بجائے جلدی جلدی پڑھیں گے ۔

Jabir bin Abdillah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a kehte hain ke Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) hamare pass tashreef laye aur hum log Quran padh rahe they aur hum mein badawi bhi they aur ajami bhi, Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Padho sab theek hai, anqarib kuchh aise log aayen ge jo isay (yani Quran ke alfaz wa kalamato ko) aisi tarah durust karen ge jaise teer durust kiya jata hai (yani tajweed wa qirat mein mubaligha karenge) aur isay thahar thahar kar padhne ke bajaaye jaldi jaldi padhen ge.

حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الْأَعْرَجِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَفِينَا الْأَعْرَابِيُّ وَالْأَعْجَمِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏   اقْرَءُوا فَكُلٌّ حَسَنٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَسَيَجِيءُ أَقْوَامٌ يُقِيمُونَهُ كَمَا يُقَامُ الْقِدْحُ يَتَعَجَّلُونَهُ وَلَا يَتَأَجَّلُونَهُ  .

Sunan Abi Dawud 831

Sahl bin Sa’d al-Sa’idi (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that one the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) came out to them while they were reciting the Qur’an. He said : Praise be to Allah. The Book of Allah is one, and among you are the red, and among you are the white and among you are the black. Recite it before there appear people who will recite it and straighten it as an arrow is straightened. They will get their reward for it in this world and will not get it in the Hereafter.

سہل بن سعد ساعدی رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ  ایک دن رسول اللہ  ﷺ  ہمارے پاس تشریف لائے، ہم قرآن کی تلاوت کر رہے تھے تو آپ  ﷺ  نے فرمایا:  الحمداللہ! اللہ کی کتاب ایک ہے اور تم لوگوں میں اس کی تلاوت کرنے والے سرخ، سفید، سیاہ سب طرح کے لوگ ہیں، تم اسے پڑھو قبل اس کے کہ ایسے لوگ آ کر اسے پڑھیں، جو اسے اسی طرح درست کریں گے، جس طرح تیر کو درست کیا جاتا ہے، اس کا بدلہ  ( ثواب )  دنیا ہی میں لے لیا جائے گا اور اسے آخرت کے لیے نہیں رکھا جائے گا ۔

Sahl bin Saad Sa'adi (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke ek din Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) hamare pass tashreef laye, hum Quran ki tilaawat kar rahe the to aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Alhamdulillah! Allah ki kitab ek hai aur tum logon mein is ki tilaawat karne wale surkh, safed, siyah sab tarah ke log hain, tum ise padho qabl is ke ke aise log aa kar ise padhen, jo ise usi tarah durust karenge, jis tarah teer ko durust kiya jata hai, is ka badla  ( thawab )  duniya hi mein le liya jaega aur ise akhirat ke liye nahin rakha jaega.

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرٌو، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ سَوَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ وَفَاءِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ الصَّدَفِيِّ،‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا وَنَحْنُ نَقْتَرِئُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏   الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كِتَابُ اللَّهِ وَاحِدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَفِيكُمُ الْأَحْمَرُ وَفِيكُمُ الْأَبْيَضُ وَفِيكُمُ الْأَسْوَدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏اقْرَءُوهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقْرَأَهُ أَقْوَامٌ يُقِيمُونَهُ كَمَا يُقَوَّمُ السَّهْمُ يُتَعَجَّلُ أَجْرُهُ وَلَا يُتَأَجَّلُهُ  .

Sunan Abi Dawud 832

Abdullah ibn Abu Awfa (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that a man came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and said: "I cannot memorize anything from the Qur'an; so teach me something which is sufficient for me." He said, "Say: سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَلا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ [Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and Allah is Most Great, and there is no god but Allah, and there is no might and no strength but in Allah]." He said: "Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), this is for Allah, but what is for me?" He said, "Say: ٱللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي وَارْزُقْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَاهْدِنِي [O Allah, have mercy on me, and sustain me, and keep me well, and guide me]." When he stood up, he made a sign with his hand (indicating that he had earned a lot). The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: "He filled up his hand with virtue."

عبداللہ بن ابو عوفہ (رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ) نے روایت کیا کہ ایک آدمی نبی کریم (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) کے پاس آیا اور کہا: "میں قرآن سے کچھ بھی یاد نہیں کر سکتا، تو مجھے ایسا کچھ سکھا دو جو میرے لیے کافی ہو۔" نبی کریم (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) نے فرمایا: "کہو: سَبْحَانَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَلا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ [اللہ کی پاکیزگی، اللہ کی حمد، اللہ سب سے بڑا ہے، اور اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، اور اللہ کے سوا کوئی طاقت اور قوت نہیں]" اس نے کہا: "یا رسول اللہ (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)، یہ تو اللہ کے لیے ہے، لیکن میرے لیے کیا ہے؟" نبی کریم (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) نے فرمایا: "کہو: اللهم ارحمني وارزقني وعافني واهدني [اے اللہ، مجھ پر رحم کر، مجھے رزق دے، مجھے تندرست رکھ، اور مجھے ہدایت دے]" جب وہ اٹھا، تو اس نے اپنے ہاتھ سے اشارہ کیا (کہ بہت کچھ حاصل کیا ہے)۔ نبی کریم (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) نے فرمایا: "اس نے اپنی ہاتھ کو خیر سے بھر لیا ہے۔"

Abdullah bin Abu Awfa (Razi Allah Ta'ala Anhu) ne riwayat kiya ke ek aadmi Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke paas aaya aur kaha: "Main Quran se kuch bhi yaad nahi kar sakta, to mujhe aisa kuch sikhado jo mere liye kafi ho." Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Kaho: Subhan Allah wa alhamdu lillah wa Allahu Akbar wa la ilaha illa Allah wa la quwwata illa billah [Allah ki paakizgi, Allah ki hamd, Allah sab se bara hai, aur Allah ke siwa koi maabood nahi, aur Allah ke siwa koi taqat aur quwwat nahi]" Usne kaha: "Ya Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), ye to Allah ke liye hai, lekin mere liye kya hai?" Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Kaho: Allahumma irhamni wa ruzuqni wa aafini wa hadini [Ae Allah, mujh par rahm kar, mujhe rizq de, mujhe tandurust rakh, aur mujhe hidayat de]" Jab woh utha, to usne apne haath se ishaara kiya (ke bohot kuch hasil kiya hai). Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Usne apne haath ko khair se bhar liya hai."

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعُ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي خَالِدٍ الدَّالاَنِيِّ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ السَّكْسَكِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى، قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ إِنِّي لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ آخُذَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْئًا فَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يُجْزِئُنِي مِنْهُ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ قُلْ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذَا لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَمَا لِي قَالَ ‏"‏ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي وَارْزُقْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَاهْدِنِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَلَمَّا قَامَ قَالَ هَكَذَا بِيَدِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ مَلأَ يَدَهُ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Sunan Abi Dawud 833

Jabir bin Abdullah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that they used to offer supererogatory prayers and recite supplications while we were standing and would glorify Allah while bowing and prostrating.

جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں ہم نفل نماز پڑھتے تو قیام و قعود کی حالت میں دعا کرتے اور رکوع و سجود کی حالت میں تسبیح پڑھتے تھے

Jaber bin Abdillah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a kehte hain hum nafl namaz padhte to qiyam o quood ki halat mein dua karte aur rukoo o sujood ki halat mein tasbeeh padhte the

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو تَوْبَةَ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ يَعْنِي الْفَزَارِيَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كُنَّا نُصَلِّي التَّطَوُّعَ نَدْعُو قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَنُسَبِّحُ رُكُوعًا وَسُجُودًا .

Sunan Abi Dawud 834

The above-mentioned tradition has also been transmitted through a different chain of narrators by Humaid, but he did not mention the word 'Supererogatory prayer'. This version has : Al-Hasan (al-Basri) would recite Fatihat al-kitab in the noon and afternoon prayers while he led in prayer or he was behind the Imam and would glorify Allah, and would repeatedly say : 'Allah is most great' and 'there is no god but Allah] equal to the amount one recites Sura Qaf and Sur Adh-Dhariyat.

حمید سے اسی کے مثل مروی ہے، اس میں راوی نے نفل کا ذکر نہیں کیا ہے، اس میں ہے کہ حسن بصری ظہر اور عصر میں خواہ وہ امام ہوں یا امام کے پیچھے ہوں، سورۃ فاتحہ پڑھتے تھے اور سورۃ ق اور سورۃ ذاریات پڑھنے کے بقدر ( وقت میں ) تسبیح و تکبیر اور تہلیل کرتے تھے۔

Hamid se usi ke misl marwi hai, is mein rawi ne nafl ka zikr nahin kiya hai, is mein hai ke Hassan Basri zuhr aur asr mein khawa woh imam hon ya imam ke peeche hon, Surah Fatiha padhte the aur Surah Q aur Surah Zariyat padhne ke badar ( waqt mein ) tasbih o takbir aur tahlil karte the.

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏مِثْلَهُ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ التَّطَوُّعَ. قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ الْحَسَنُ يَقْرَأُ فِي الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ إِمَامًا أَوْ خَلْفَ إِمَامٍ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيُسَبِّحُ وَيُكَبِّرُ وَيُهَلِّلُ قَدْرَ ق، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالذَّارِيَاتِ .
