Chapter: How to wish for mercy on a person when you hear a sneeze

بَابُ كَيْفَ تَشْمِيتُ مَنْ سَمِعَ الْعَطْسَةَ

Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 927

Abu Salih reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "When one of you sneezes, he should say, 'Praise be to Allah.' When he says, 'Praise be to Allah, ' his brother or companion should say to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you.' Then let the person who sneezed say, 'May Allah guide you and put your affairs in order.'"

سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا:’’جب تم میں سے کسی کو چھینک آئے تو وہ الحمد للہ کہے، جب وہ الحمد للہ کہے تو اس کا بھائی یا ساتھی یرحمک اللّٰہ کہے اور جسے چھینک آئی وہ یہ کہے:یھدیکم اللّٰہ ویصلح بالکم (اللہ تعالیٰ تیری رہنمائی کرے اور تیری حالت درست کر دے)۔

Sayyidna Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se riwayat hai ki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: ''Jab tum mein se kisi ko chheenk aaye to woh Alhamdulillah kahe, jab woh Alhamdulillah kahe to uska bhai ya sathi Yarhamuk Allah kahe aur jise chheenk aayi woh ye kahe: Yahdikum Allah Wa Yuslih Balakum.

حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ‏:‏ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ‏:‏ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ‏:‏ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، فَإِذَا قَالَ‏:‏ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، فَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ‏:‏ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ، وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ‏:‏ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ‏.‏

Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 928

Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Allah loves the sneeze and dislikes yawning. When one you sneezes and praises Allah, it is a duty for every Muslim who hears him to say, 'May Allah have mercy on you.;' As for the yawn, it comes from Shaytan. When one of you yawns, he should repress it as much as possible. When one of you yawns, Shaytan laughs at him."

سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا:’’اللہ تعالیٰ چھینک کو پسند کرتا ہے اور جماہی کو ناپسند کرتا ہے۔ اور جب تم میں سے کسی کو چھینک آئے اور وہ اللہ کی تعریف کرے تو سننے والے ہر مسلمان پر حق ہے کہ وہ اسے یرحمک اللّٰہ کہے۔ اور جہاں تک جماہی کا تعلق ہے تو وہ شیطان کی طرف سے ہے، لہٰذا جب تم میں سے کسی کو جماہی آئے تو وہ اسے ہرممکن روکنے کی کوشش کرے۔ جب تم میں سے کسی کو جماہی آتی ہے تو شیطان اس سے ہنستا ہے۔‘‘

Syedna Abu Hurairah RA se riwayat hai keh Nabi SAW ne farmaya: Allah Ta'ala chheenk ko pasand karta hai aur jamahi ko napasand karta hai. Aur jab tum mein se kisi ko chheenk aaye aur wo Allah ki tareef kare to sun'ne wala har Musalman par haq hai keh wo usay 'Yarhamuk Allah' kahe. Aur jahan tak jamahi ka ta'aluq hai to wo shaitan ki taraf se hai, lihaza jab tum mein se kisi ko jamahi aaye to wo usay har mumkin rokne ki koshish kare. Jab tum mein se kisi ko jamahi aati hai to shaitan us se hansta hai.

حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ‏:‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْعُطَاسَ، وَيَكْرَهُ التَّثَاؤُبَ، وَإِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ وَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ سَمِعَهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ‏:‏ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ‏.‏ فَأَمَّا التَّثَاؤُبُ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، فَإِذَا تَثَاءَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَرُدَّهُ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ، فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إِذَا تَثَاءَبَ ضَحِكَ مِنْهُ الشَّيْطَانُ‏.‏

Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 929

Ibn 'Abbas said, "When someone is wished mercy, he should say, 'May Allah protect us and you from the Fire. May Allah have mercy on you.'"


Grade: Sahih

ابوجمرہ رحمہ اللہ سے روایت ہے کہ میں نے سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کو چھینک کے جواب میں یہ فرماتے ہوئے سنا:عافانا اللّٰہ وإیاکم من النار، یرحمکم اللّٰہ اللہ تعالیٰ ہمیں اور تمہیں آگ سے بچائے اور اللہ تعالیٰ تم پر رحم فرمائے۔

AbuJura rahimahullah se riwayat hai keh maine Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ko chheenk ke jawab mein yeh farmate huye suna: Afaana Allahu wa iyyakum min an-nar, yarhamukum Allah. Allah Ta'ala humein aur tumhein aag se bachaye aur Allah Ta'ala tum par reham farmaye.

حَدَّثَنَا حَامِدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ قَالَ‏:‏ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ إِذَا شُمِّتَ‏:‏ عَافَانَا اللَّهُ وَإِيَّاكُمْ مِنَ النَّارِ، يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللَّهُ‏.‏

Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 930

Abu Hurayra said, "We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when a man sneezed and praised Allah. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you.' Then another man sneezed but the Prophet did not say anything to him. The man, 'Messenger of Allah! you responded to the other man, but did not say anything to me!' The Prophet replied, 'He praised Allah and you were silent.'"

حضرت ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ ہم رسول اللہ ﷺ کے پاس بیٹھے ہوئے تھے کہ ایک آدمی کو چھینک آئی اور اس نے الحمد للہ کہا تو رسول اللہ ﷺ نے اسے یَرْحَمُكَ اللّٰہُ فرمایا۔ پھر ایک آدمی کو چھینک آئی تو آپ نے اس سے کچھ نہ فرمایا تو اس نے عرض کیا:اللہ کے رسول! آپ نے اسے جواب دیا اور مجھے آپ نے چھینک کا جواب نہیں دیا۔ آپ نے فرمایا:اس نے اللہ کی تعریف کی اور تم خاموش رہے۔‘‘

Hazrat Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se riwayat hai ki hum Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke pass baithe hue the ki ek aadmi ko chheenk aai aur usne Alhamdulillah kaha to Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne use Yarhamukallah farmaaya. Phir ek aadmi ko chheenk aai to aap ne us se kuchh na farmaaya to usne arz kiya: Allah ke Rasul! Aap ne use jawab diya aur mujhe aap ne chheenk ka jawab nahin diya. Aap ne farmaaya: Usne Allah ki tareef ki aur tum khamosh rahe.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ، قَالَ‏:‏ أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْلَى، قَالَ‏:‏ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُنَيْنٍ وَهُوَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ كَيْسَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ‏:‏ كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم‏:‏ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ، ثُمَّ عَطَسَ آخَرُ، فَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَهُ شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ‏:‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، رَدَدْتَ عَلَى الْآخَرِ، وَلَمْ تَقُلْ لِي شَيْئًا‏؟‏ قَالَ‏:‏ إِنَّهُ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ، وَسَكَتَّ‏.‏
