Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 13537
It is narrated on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever a man would meet the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would ask him, "How are you?" And he would always reply, "Alhamdulillah! I am well." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would reply, "May Allah keep you well." One day, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) met him, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him as usual, "How are you?" He replied, "I am well, if I am grateful." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent. He asked, "O Prophet of Allah! Before, when you would ask me about my well-being, you would pray for me, 'May Allah keep you well.' Today you are silent?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Before, when I would ask you, you would say, 'Alhamdulillah! I am well.' So, I would reply, 'May Allah keep you well.' But today, you said, 'If I am grateful.' So I doubted, therefore I remained silent."

حضرت انس رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ ایک آدمی جب بھی نبی ﷺ کو ملتا تو نبی ﷺ اس سے دریافت فرماتے کہ تمہارا کیا حال ہے؟ اور وہ ہمیشہ یہی جواب دیتا کہ الحمدللہ! خیریت سے ہوں، نبی ﷺ اسے جواباً فرما دیتے کہ اللہ تمہیں خیریت ہی سے رکھے، ایک دن جب نبی ﷺ کی اس سے ملاقات ہوئی تو آپ ﷺ نے حسب معمول اس سے سوال پوچھا کہ تمہارا کیا حال ہے؟ اس نے جواب دیا کہ خیریت سے ہوں بشرطیکہ شکر کروں، اس پر نبی ﷺ خاموش ہوگئے۔ اس نے پوچھا کہ اے اللہ کے نبی! پہلے تو جب آپ مجھ سے میرا حال دریافت کرتے تھے تو مجھے دعاء دیتے تھے کہ اللہ تمہیں خیریت سے رکھے، آج آپ خاموش ہوگئے؟ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا کہ پہلے میں تم سے سوال کرتا تھا تو تم یہ کہتے تھے کہ الحمدللہ! خیریت سے ہوں، اس لئے میں جواباً کہہ دیتا تھا کہ اللہ تمہیں خیریت سے رکھے، لیکن آج تم نے کہا کہ " اگر میں شکر کروں " تو مجھے شک ہوگیا اس لئے میں خاموش ہوگیا۔
Hazrat Anas Radi Allaho Anho se marvi hai ki aik aadmi jab bhi Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ko milta to Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam us se daryaft farmate ki tumhara kya haal hai? Aur wo hamesha yahi jawab deta ki Alhamdulillah! Khairiyat se hun, Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam use jawab farmate ki Allah tumhe khairiyat se rakhe, aik din jab Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ki us se mulaqat hui to aap Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ne hasb mamul us se sawal pucha ki tumhara kya haal hai? Us ne jawab diya ki khairiyat se hun basharte ke shukar karoon, is par Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam khamosh hogaye. Us ne pucha ke aye Allah ke Nabi! Pehle to jab aap mujh se mera haal daryaft karte the to mujhe dua dete the ki Allah tumhe khairiyat se rakhe, aaj aap khamosh hogaye? Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ne farmaya ke pehle mein tum se sawal karta tha to tum ye kehte the ki Alhamdulillah! Khairiyat se hun, is liye mein jawaban kehta tha ki Allah tumhe khairiyat se rakhe, lekin aaj tum ne kaha ki "agar mein shukar karoon" to mujhe shak hogaya is liye mein khamosh hogaya.
حَدَّثَنَا مُؤَمَّلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ : أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، كَانَ يَلْقَى رَجُلًا، فَيَقُولُ: يَا فُلَانُ، كَيْفَ أَنْتَ؟ فَيَقُولُ: بِخَيْرٍ، أَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ، فَيَقُولُ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: جَعَلَكَ اللَّهُ بِخَيْرٍ، فَلَقِيَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ، فَقَالَ: كَيْفَ أَنْتَ يَا فُلَانُ؟ فَقَالَ: بِخَيْرٍ، إِنْ شَكَرْتُ، قَالَ: فَسَكَتَ عَنْهُ، فَقَالَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ، إِنَّكَ كُنْتَ تَسْأَلُنِي، فَتَقُولُ: جَعَلَكَ اللَّهُ بِخَيْرٍ، وَإِنَّكَ الْيَوْمَ سَكَتَّ عَنِّي، فَقَالَ لَهُ:" إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَسْأَلُكَ، فَتَقُولُ: بِخَيْرٍ، أَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ، فَأَقُولُ: جَعَلَكَ اللَّهُ بِخَيْرٍ، وَإِنَّكَ الْيَوْمَ، قُلْتَ: إِنْ شَكَرْتُ، فَشَكَكْتَ، فَسَكَتُّ عَنْكَ".
